The information on the Rutherford family that Silas Rutherford put
out, isn't entirely reliable. You were correct to suspect errors.
Regarding the question of the unwed mother, Lilley, I don't believe
this is the case. There were two Lilleys, with various spellings of the
name. Richard's daughter, Lilley was born in 1834 and married Richard
Stewart. James's daughter, Lilley, was born in 1831, and married Thomas Bradshaw.
A baby, Ann Jane, was born to Ann Jane (Rutherford) and Duncan
Anderson in 1850. My guess is that Richard's daughter Lilley may have been staying with her big sister Ann Jane, helping them out, and her name was taken by the census taker twice. (This was sometimes the case.) Another problem is that sometimes the person's "second" name was what was commonly used, and here again my guess it that the baby, Ann Jane, was listed as Jane. It just depends on who's answering the questions.
Regarding the family you listed that included a William, age 59, and Jane, age 49, I have a copy of the 1851 census here, and it clearly shows Richard, age 59, wife Jane and all the children you listed along with Jane's mother-in-law, Agnes Nichol. All the ages seem correct, and I wonder if someone accidentally put in the name William for Richard. There was no William Rutherford of that age in South Monaghan that I've ever heard of before, nor do I see a William on the 1851 census. (I have a copy of the original)
Regarding 5616 (5607):
This information is NOT correct. Richard's son, William, was born in
1832 and died in 1904. He married Margaret Smithson in 1858. They did, however, have a daughter named Sarah among their nine children. Their son, William Smithson Rutherford is the father of the Margaret Davidson who lived in Ottawa. I received lengthy letters from Margaret in the late 80's before she passed away. She was a lovely lady, and wrote at length about the Rutherford history in the South Monaghan area. Her information and much of the documented evidence that she provided me, helped to dispel many of the errors that Silas had in his information. He did the best he could, I'm sure, but it was quite a mess to untangle a lot of things.
Anyway, I'll print out the "tree" I have of all the Rutherford descendants so you can compare with what you have. Perhaps it will help to clarify some questions. I hope I can get all of my papers typed and on disc
so I can upload them, and also so that none of the work gets lost if my plane goes down someday!
Hope this information helps. It would take days to tell you the whole
story of the family. I really didn't find anything new on the Rutherford's
while in Ontario. I did get to hear some interesting anecdotes about the
family, and I got one picture of Mary Rutherford, Richard's daughter, who married James Wood. That was neat. The book entitled, South Monaghan--The Garden of Eden is helpful, and has a good history of the area with pictures and some maps. It was just put out, written by Jean Murray Cole. It's costs $35.00, including shipping and handling, payable to: Township of South Monaghan
