editors note: reference here is to Josiah Charles Rutherford and brother William Norman Rutherford
Three weeks ago in my column I mentioned that in early 1889, Charles and Norman Rutherford of Ontario, Canada, had started a meat market in Drayton. This was the earliest reference to the Rutherford family that I found in the Drayton Echo. A follow up to that item I print below with the permission of Gladys Brosseau of Drayton.
"Charles and Norman Rutherford, along with their parents James and Letitia Rutherford and eight other children came to the Nash, N.D. area in 1889. Twins, John and Joseph (commonly known as Jack and Joe) took up farming there and lived in that area all of their lives. In addition to the meat market business Charles also worked on the railroad. He died at 68 years of age. Norman died at the early age of 24 years. Approximately 50 years later their nieces Babe, Mable, and Glady and nephews Joe and Deb Rutherford settled in the Drayton area. Babe was in the restaurant business for may years and Joe and Deb were among the first in the potato industry in the area. -------------------------------------------------------------------------- -------------------------------------------------------------------------- ---------------
Josiah married Mary Ann Simpson on 25 Jan 1888.
