Joe Rutherford of Grafton Died On Wednesday

Joseph H. Rutherford, 84, a resident of the Grafton community for over two-thirds of a century, died early Wednesday morning at his home.
Mr. Rutherford was born on Jan 31, 1875, at Peterboro, Ontario, Canada, the son of the late James and Lettia Perren Rutherford. His father came to Fertile township in 1885 and purchased 400 acres of land. His family joined him in 1889 and the deceased had been a resident of that area since that time.
Among the survivors are his widow, the former Alma Dahl, whom he married at Crookston, Minn., on June 9, 1948, two sons, Milford C. Rutherford of Walhalla and Clinton Rutherford of Grafton; a daughter, Mrs. Clarence Evanson of Drayton; his twin brother Jack Rutherford of Grafton, and 10 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
Funeral services are set for 1 o'clock Saturday afternoon at the Adams Funeral home in Grafton. Dean Swenson will officiate and interment will be in the Grafton city cemetery. Pallbearers will be Art Swanson, George Anderson, Henry Monson, Rueben Johnson, Lawrence Mohagen, and Herzel Larson. The body will lie in state at the Adams Funeral Home after 4 o'clock Friday afteroon.

Joseph Rutherford

John Nichol Rutherford and Joseph Henry Rutherford were born in Port Hope, Ontario, January 31, 1975. At the age of 14, they came with their parents, James and Letitia Rutherford to Fertile township, in the Nash area. where their father bought land from Mr. Olson in 1888.
Upon the death of James Rutherford in 1913, Joe , as better known, took over the farming operation. Joe bought additional land in Glenwood Township, joining that of his father's. His mother died in 1926, having made her home with Joe and his family since her husband's death.
Joe served on the school board and elevator board for several years. He farmed jointly with his sons, Russell and Clinton, until his death in 1959. He was married to Lizzie Hanson in Nov. 1899. They were the parents of five children; Milford, Hazel, Ida (actually Ila, ed), Russell and Clinton. Hazel died in 1907 and is buried at North Trinity Cemetery. Mr. Rutherford died in 1931.(editors note.. it was Mrs. Rutherford who died in 1931 (Elizabeth (Hanson) Rutherford. Joseph Henry Rutherford died April 15, 1959), Russell in 1943 and Clinton in 1973. All are buried in Grafton City Cemetery, Grafton.
