bullet  Research Notes:

Listowel - previous names were Mapleton and Windham, both of which were used by inhabitants. In 1856 the post office opened, and, unable to decide between the two names, the officials went with neither of them and picked a name out of the air, the name of a town in Ireland. The inhabitants of Listowel (sometimes spelled Listowell in early years) didn't even know how to pronounce it; the name of the Irish city is pronounced "Lis-TOLE" but even today the name of the Perth County town is pronounced "LIST-uh-wel" or "LIST'w'l."

Hi All,
Yes, Barbara Sniffen is correct. The spelling of The name of Samuel's daughter, is Lydia (Winch) Dafoe Evens, is, from the records we have checked in census and by the family's papers as given by Fae Robbins, the 1920's genealogist who corresponded with the known Winch grandaughters. Lydia's relatives also spelled her name as Lydia Winch Dafoe Evens. [] To verify this you may want to check the Canadian Census of that date, and also round them up on the U.S. Census.
Also, we must mind our P's and Q's not to mix her up with that particular Lydia Mann who was the First wife of Samuel JR.s brother John Winch, the same who died after the birth of several of her children, whereupon John married Jane Mc.Mulkin, who then produced a further family of children, all according to Canadian census.
Those children identified by one of John's gr. grand. who lived in North Dakota.
Neither must we confuse Mary Ann Winch who married George Newton Mann and later moved back to the U.S. thence to Iowa and Missouri. Most of this is available on the Winch files I have seen on the FHL records.
The best source for the records of Mary Ann Winch and George Newton Mann are from a lady named Marge Barber, (Mrs. Gerald) who at one time lived at Pequot Lakes MN. She has since moved and I have not been able to locate her. She was a gr. gr. grandaughter of Mary and George Newton Mann and had gathered much valuable information.
Another descendant , male, of the above George Newton - Mary Ann (Winch) Mann family was Donald Doty, who lived in Orem Utah about 20 years ago. He was a dedicated family searcher, very happy to share his large collection of records with any interested relatives He has not corresponded for many years, I expect he may be found on the Soc Sec Death Index, although I have not checked!
Also, we must not confuse Maria Winch Kidd , Samuel's deceased daughter with any one else. The Kidd family is discussed in Ontario County histories. Look her up on the Ontario Gen Soc. Indices, where the Kidd family biography notes would be indexed, and the Ontario Marriage Index, and of course the Probate and Land Indexes.
If your interest leads you onward, they probably left evidence in the records of Listowell Ontario.
James, if this does not make sense, mention where you think we may be amiss, or ask Steve Winch who has valid material.
Regards to all,
June
