"An Investigation into the ancestry of ALEXANDER LAING; born 1855", copy received with many thanks from Anita C. Friedman of Christchurch, NZ, on June 27, 2002

page 6
page 1-5 comprise many marriage , birth and census records recorded seperately.

"There are lists of Monumental Inscriptions (tombstone recordings) held in the Library at New Register House covering both Bathgate and Whitburn parishes. A search of these revealed no entries whatsoever under Laing or Lang.

There are death/burial records in the OPR's for Bathgate. We know that Robert Laing was alive in 1802 when Margaret was born, so a search was made of these records from 1802 on and what looks like Robert's death was located in 1833 as follows:

"Robert Lang died 27 March, 1833, age (blank). Cause- Old age"

Unfortunately the Session Clerk has omitted to fill in the age, so we are frustrated in not knowing whn Robert was born.

I have already noted Alexander Laing's marriage to Elizabeth Wilson in 1819, but I note on your chart a daughter, Marion, born in 1814. I searched Bathgate OPR's to see if perhaps Alexander had been married previously, but the only entry which could be 'our' man was frustratingly lacking in detail, so it is almost impossible to say with any certainty if this is the correct Alexander and no wife's name is given:-

"Alexander Lang married 21st July, 1811. Paid 8/6d."
(Ref. OPRm/Bathgate, Co. West Lothian 662/3)

A search was made of West Lothian Mormon Index to OPR births, but I found no trace of a Robert Laing/Lang birth around the mid 1700's, although the name Lang is in evidence in Bathgate back to the early 1700's. It would appear that a great many births went unrecorded in these particular OPR's.

The search was terminated here. I feel that there is little likelihood, due to lack of records, of the Laing line being carried further back. Should you wish to carry on with further research I would suggest starting work on the Middleton, Baillie, Smith and Wilson lines."
