Thomas Rowles, born 1828, married Margaret Smucker, age fifteen. She was the only daughter of Aaron Smucker and Saray (Vsn Slyke) Smuker. Granny Smucker lived with her daughter to the age of 106 when she died in 1926 and is buried in the Okotoks Cemetery. Thomas and Margaret were married in April 1855, in Hollins County, Ontario. They moved to Kansas where John was born, and he always went by the name Kans. When he was very young they moved back to Ontario and operated a hotel, and eleven more children were born. In 1880, Thomas and Kans came west and two years later the rest of the family came by oxcart, arriving in Okotoks May 24th, 1882 and stayed at Hans Clark's place until Thomas had the log house complete on their farm three miles east of town W 24, 20-29-W4. Another daughter was born in 1885, this was Ida Florence. Thomas built and operated the Royal Hotel near the east end of town and they also had a farm E. 28, 20-28-W4, near Droppo and Carrol. Mrs. Rowles and the younger children lived here for a while and William did the farming. He and his wife lived there for many years and had four sons, Albert the eldest married Alice Adams; Clarence lives in B. C.; Emanuel died very young and Edmund was the other son. Many of this big family married into families associated with the history of Gladys, so I will include a thumbnail sketch of the family:
