Note: The parentage of William Childs, born about 1845-1846 in Dorset, (likely Evershot or Corscombe) is still very much uncertain. It is likely that his mother was Maria Childs but this is still being researched actively as of May 2006.
Note: The December 1848 registration of marriage of a Maria Childs , registered in Beaminster, vol 8, page 13
On the same page is listed the name Andrew Childs as well as a Henry Bolling..
The 1851 census records of Melbury Osmond, Dorset indicates that it was Henry Bolling who married this particular Maria Childs in 1848 (family 38, page 8 showing Henry and Maria Bolling with a one year old son named Charles John Bolling.) This marriage still intact in 1871 in Melbury Osmond, Dorset.

This should prove out to be the death registration for our Maria Gillard.

On the same marriage registration page is listed the name Andrew Childs...
The 1851 census records of Melbury Osmond, Dorset show a Henry and Maria Bolling with a one year old son (Chas. John Bolling) . This is likely the same couple as shown above. Ages 27 and 26. Maria shows as being born in Melbury Osmond, Dorset. This would certainly indicate that she is a different Maria Childs as shown on the 1851 census in Sherborne, working as a servant at the Black Horse Inn with Henry Gillard.
Maria next married Henry Gillard, son of Thomas Gillard and Edith Davidge, on 30 Dec 1851 in Parish Church, Sherborne, Dorset.1 (Henry Gillard was born about 1825 in North Wootton, Dorset 4 5 8 9 11 12.)

Maria Childs and William Gillard are working together in the same inn as servants.
Maria eventually marries Henry Gillard, the brother of William and
Harriet Childs (the sister of Maria ) marries William Gillard.
Harriet Childs is not far away in the Angle Inn in Sherborne.
The possibilities of the parentage of our William Childs born about 1846 seem to be endless.
The 1861 census shows William Childs as a nephew to William and Harriet (Childs) Gillard, but this could have many meanings. My guess is that Maria was the mother of our William Childs but the father could be anybody's guess at this point. (April 2006. jca) Harriet Childs would seem to be a bit young to be the mother of our William Childs.
And of course it is always possible that the eldest Childs sister Elizabeth might have survived to be the mother of our William and we just havent located her anywhere yet. However the 1841 census of the Childs family does not show Elizabeth so perhaps she died young and is out of the picture at this point.
