William Newberry ^{1 2}

Searching for the origin of the William Newberry (a Gamekeeper) and Sophia Baker (as per the 1990 death registration of their son William Newberry. (who was born in England according to the son's census records)

A search for christenings of possible siblings turns up a couple of interesting items.
1. christening of a Sophia Newberry, 20 June 1817, Saint James, Westminster, London
parents: William and Sophia Newberry.

A further check of LDS IGI marriages in England shows a William Newberry and Sophia Shreeves, married in Saint James Westminster, 28 Dec 1785. so this MAY NOT BE our couple.

2. christening of a Mary Ann Newberry, 22 April 1821, Oundle, Northampton,
parents: William and Sophia Newberry.

A further check of marriages in England indicate that this would be William Newberry and Sophia White, married 15 OCT 1818 ,Alconbury Cum Weston, Huntingdon, England.
So again NOT our William Newberry and Sophia Baker.

A search of the 1851 census of England looking for William Newberry, born prior to 1805 doesnt turn up anybody that looks appropriate either.

The 1851 census of Bexley, Kent does show a Sophia Newberry, age 65, a widow, Labourer's widow, born Kent, Erith with an unmarried son William Newberry, age 33, Farm Labourer, also born Kent, Erith. This record can be discounted however , as our son William Newberry , although is the same age as this one, is already married and living in Scotland considerably before this time.

A search of the 1861 census of Scotland, looking for either a William or Sophia Newberry, aged between 60 and 90 years, turns up no-one. The 1851 census for Scotland has not yet been indexed, but is expected to be released soon.

July 17, 2006, FINALLY.. The 1841 census of Scotland turns up what surely has to be our William and Sophia Newberry as follows:
1841 census, Selkirk, Selkirkshire, Scotland
page 2, residence of Haning Kennel?
William Newberry, male, age 45, occupation M/S (Male Servant), born England
Sopha ", female, age 46, born England
Mary Sutherland, female, age 3, Grand Daughter, not born in County

This Mary Sutherland shows up 10 years later on the 1851 census with her father Angus Sutherland (now a widower) AND Angus's brother-in-law William Newberry, age 32, occupation Gamekeeper, and born in Kent England. Very , very nice... jca

• Occupation: Male Servant, 1841, Selkirk, Selkirkshire, Scotland. ²

William married Sophia Baker. (Sophia Baker was born about 1794 in England ².)
