Bailey, Melville Thomas, published 1981. DUGGAN, THOMAS
Physician and surgeon, born 1812 in York, Toronto, Upper Canada.
Married Margaret around 1861 and they had several children. Died 4th March, 1874 at Hamilton, Ontario. Buried in St. James Cemetery at Toronto.
Thomas Duggan was the son of coroner Colonel George Duggan. He studied medicine with Doctor John King in Toronto, passing the examinations of the Upper Canada medical board in July 1833. He set up practice in Toronto but later moved to Thornhill. In 1835 he became a member of managing committee of the Emigrant Society of Upper Canada.
During the rebellion of 1837 he acted as assistant surgeon to the Queen's Light Infantry. Duggan may arrived in Hamilton as early as 1840. He certainly was well established by 1846 when he was living at the corner of Rebecca and Hewson Streets. The city was stricken with a cholera epidemic in 1854 and he was among the local doctors who attended the sick. As their was no proven method of combating the disease, each doctor advocated his own favorite remedy, Duggan's being ale.
In 1841 Duggan became an affiliate member of the Masonic Barton Lodge. During the remainder of his life he held a variety of important positions both locall and nationally within the order. He was a member of the Church of England.
