He was baptised with the name of Robert Thomas Walker. On 15 July 1847 his name was legally changed to Robert Thomas Flower. He gained the rank of Lieutenant-Colonel in the service of the 4th Battalion, Leinster Regiment, Royal Canadians.2 He succeeded to the title of 9th Baron Castle-Durrow, co. Kilkenny [I., 1733] on 26 November 1906.3 He succeeded to the title of 8th Viscount Ashbrook [I., 1751] on 26 November 1906

Robert married Gertrude Sophia Hamilton, daughter of Rev. Sewell Hamilton and Unknown. (Gertrude Sophia Hamilton was born in Ireland ⁸⁸.)
