Biographical Notes, (The Van de Waters' by Edna (Van de Water) Cameron.

Vera Kathleen Van Blaricom, nče Van der Water
was born in the Township of Hallowell in the County of Prince Edward in Ontario on Dec 7th, 1891. Her father was William Edgar Van der Water, then of Wellington, Ont. and her mother was Amelia McFaul. At a very early age her father moved into the Township of Sidney in the county of Hastings, Ont., where he farmed the West Half of Lot 30 on the Second Concession (the old David Van der Water Farm). This was the Centenary District about 3 miles from the City of Belleville. Her primary education was received at Albert College in Belleville. After graduation with High School, leaving grade XII, she attended the Faculty of Education at Queen's University in Kingston. Later she attended the Ontario School of Art in Toronto and rec'd her Interim Certificate as a Supervisor of Art from the Ontario Dept. of Education. She taught in Ontario, mostly Latin, English and Art. She returned to Queen's to get her B. A. During summer vacations she taught "Summer School" on the prairies of Saskatchewan as did many university undergraduates in those days.

World War 1 interrupted her studies; to help the cause she and another Queen's undergraduate went to New York City and became First Class Radio operators. They were then employed by the Board of Education of the City of New York to conduct night school classes for all enlisted men who wished to become wireless operators which enabled them to transfer from the Infantry to the Corps of Signals. When the war ended she came back to Canada and returned to Queen's from which she graduated with her B.A. in May of 1919.

She was married on 12th of June, 1920, at Regina, Sask., to a young war veteran who was starting his law practice at Tisdale, Saskatchewan. Here she lived until her husband retired and went to British Columbia in the fall of 1957. She had three homes in that town. She called them: Quinte Cottage, VanArbour, and Halcyon Cottage. Two children were born, Verna and Lawrence. Both are university graduates and are happily married with a family. She has nine grandchildren.

Her chief characteristic was love of beauty where ever found, love of beauty as expressed in art, love of beauty and excellence as expressed in good literature, love of beauty as expressed by nice gardens and colourful flower, and graceful living. In Tisdale "The Book Club" (ladies only) and "The Science Club" ( a study-discussion group) received her support and admiration. Later, in Kelowna, "The Kelowna Shakespeare Club" was a joy to her.

On November 26, 1964, The Department of Natural Resources of the Province of Saskatchewan, through the Canadian Permanent Committee on Geographical Names at Ottawa, caused a lake at Latitude 55 23' 30" and Longitude 105 50' 00" to be named "Van Blaricom Lake" in honour of her and her husband. The citation or certificate accompanying notice thereof contained this:

"Saskatchewan's finest resource is the character and quality of her peoples. It is appropriate that her geographical features perpetuate the names and honour the work of those prominent in development of the Province, and those who gave dedicated service to fellow citizens."
