Steel Hawthorn and Janet Pollock and the Pickering/Kyles family
I have been doing a bit of digging re Steel Hawthorn and some of my notes follow. It seems that the maiden name of Steel hawthorn's wife was Janet Pollock, not Forsyth as my great grandfather informed the registrar at the time of her death. I attach a few certificates. Please do not hesitate to contact me if I have missed anything vital.
It would seem that Steel Hawthorn was born in Ireland about 1796 but moved to Lanarkshire to find work in the coal mines. In 1817 he and Janet Pollock, probably born in the area, were married. From 1817 until 1833 he worked as a miner and they lived in villages surrounding Coatbridge. In 1828, they were in Greenend, SE of Coatbridge. In 1833, they were in Gartcloss, N of the town, described as one of the most considerable collieries of the area. (A drawing of the time can be found by searching Google for Gartcloss Colliery. Perhaps the Hawthorns lived in the houses which can be seen behind and to the right of the mine.) After 1833, the Hawthorns' children are not recorded in the Old Monkland parish register and it may that they had moved to another parish. In the 1841 census, they appear in Legbranock, near Holytown in Bothwell parish. Steel and the three eldest sons, William, Levi and Arthur, are miners. No occupation is given for the four daughters, Margaret, Agnes, Jane and Mary. There are two younger sons, Thomas and Brownlee. In 1843, the eldest son, William married Margaret Jack from Newarthill, a couple of miles from Legbranock. It is not clear where the family lived thereafter. By the 1851 census, Steel Hawthorn is dead and Janet Pollock (Hathorn in the census) is living in Peaseweep Row, Dalry, Ayrshire. The census contains various inaccuracies and is not therefore very helpful. William, the eldest son, had also moved to Dalry and was employed as an iron miner. In 1856, Thomas, described as an iron miner, married Margaret Allan. In 1860 Jean (Jane), described as a domestic servant in Beith, married John McReady. In 1861 census Janet Pollock is living in the household of her unmarried son, Arthur, an ironstone miner, at Sharon St., Dalry. She died in Dalry in 1867.
