bullet  Research Notes:

By the way - all the Sandys were born in Ireland, also in County Roscommon! Alexander's oldest boy, William, changes his birthplace at every census - he was a salesman travelling and selling his own firm's fancy trimmings, so to stay in a lodging house he hides his Irish roots. A common sign on guesthouses etc. was "No Tinkers, No Irish, No Dogs".?
What I think happened is:
Sometime after 1851 (no sign of them in the English census) the Sandys came from Roscommon. Maybe the Dockerys kept in touch from Runcorn - it seems possible they knew each other in Roscommon. We don't know where the Sandys were exactly in 1858 - but Liverpool is just across the Mersey from Runcorn, and Irish communities kept together. Being Catholic too would bring them together. Maybe they moved to Runcorn temporarily?
John and Maria married, Alexander attended, perhaps others did too? In 1861, the Dockerys had moved to Altrincham, and the Sandys to Sculcoates. There they were close by a family called Conniff - Thomas Sandys is Thomas 'Conniff' Sandys - often taken from the mother / mother's family. Perhaps the Conniffs had moved to Sculcoates (Hull) earlier? Certainly William Alexander Sandys knew John Conniff - they were both "Outdoor Customs Officer"s in Hull.
Eliza Sandys marries my John Joesph O'Connor. He was born in Runcorn - his father was Bernard O'Connor, and owned and ran his own "Boys Academy". He was a classics teacher. He was also a regular god-father at the local Catholic church - St Edwards! Small world, eh?
Hope you find this interesting. Mike Levon, February, 2006
