Stephen Bugg 1
General Notes:
Research below provided by Mr. Gavin Nicholson . January, 2004 residence: Australia.
George(17) BUGG. Born 23 Nov 1874(71) in Rattlesden, Suffolk, England. Died 28 Oct 1932(4) in Perth, WA, Australia. Buried Oct 1932 in Anglican Cemetery, Karrakatta, Perth, WA, Australia. Occupation Maltster, Army Soldier. Religion Church of England.
George was born to William Bugg, a labourer, and Rosetta Cobbold. At the 1891 census he was the second of six children and the only boy. His parent's names were obtained from his birth certificate which is in the possession of Elizabeth Kingdon.
Although born in Rattlesden, the family moved around quite a lot. In 1881 he was living in Battisford. In 1891 the family was in Creeting St Peter and George was working as an agricultural labourer like his father. All the villages are within a 10 mile radius of Stowmarket.
He married Jessie Ballam in 1901(17) at the age of 26. In 1902 he and his wife had their first child, George.
The family arrived from England around December 1903. Their first son died in 1904 and they had another, William also in 1904. They had another five children from that time, Lillian, Steven, Stanley, Frederick and George. The second George also died as an infant at 16 months.
His occupation from at least 1904 until 1911 was a Maltster (brewer). On 29 Feb 1916 he enlisted in the AIF at the age of 41. He joined D Company of the 3rd Australian Pioneer Battalion and his service number was 1100(26) . Pioneer battalions performed construction tasks in the forward area not requiring the special equipment of engineers, such as constructing trenches and dugouts although they occasionally acted in the engineer role on tasks such as the construction of bridges. They had a large proportion of tradesmen (although George was not) and were organised the same as infantry battalions. In a pinch they could and did serve as infantry in the front line.
When George enlisted in 1916 he was described as 5ft 4 inches tall wth light grey eyes and brown hair and a fresh complexion. He weighed 150lbs. He departed Australia from Melbourne aboard the "Wandilla" on 6 June 1916 and arrived in Plymouth on 26 July 1916. On 24 November 1916 he was sent to France. He remained in France throughout the war and in June 1918 trained as a cook.
Whilst overseas his wife died in May 1919 and according to family stories the children were put into a Salvation Army home.
He returned to Australia aboard the "Somali" on 8 July 1919.
He discharged from the AIF on 22 August 1919 having remained a private and being uninjured. He was awarded the British War Medal and the Victory Medal(26) .
He lived at 64 Cambridge St, Bayswater from at least 1904 until April 1917. In 1917 his wife advised the Army that she had moved to Guildford Rd, Bayswater.(26)
In August 1919 his discharge certificate stated that he was going to live in Garrett Rd, Bayswater.(71)
George died one month short of his 58th birthday and is buried in the Anglican area (GC106) with his wife and two children named George in an unmarked grave(4).
He married Jessie Maude BALLAM, 8 Apr 1901(17) in Walthamstow, Essex, England.
---------------------------------------- 2 William(71) BUGG. Born Approx 1849(32) in Badley, Suffolk, England. Died After 1902 in Suffolk, England. Occupation Labourer.
William was the son of Stephen Bugg, a labourer, and Mary Ann. He was the last of four children according to the 1851 census. William's fathers name was obtained from his marriage certificate. His mother's name was obtained from the 1851 census which lists a young William with his parents living in Badley.
Badley is a very small town. In 1801 the population was ony 82 and this had only increased to 102 by 1911. The parish of Badley or Badelea as it was known in olden times, derives its name Badelea which means 'Badda's lea' where lea is an old English word for meadow or glade. The name Badelea is of Saxon origin and in some old records was spelled Badeleia.
Badley is 1,078 acres of land bordered on two sides by rivers. It's eastern boundary being formed by the River Gipping. The southern boundary being formed by the River Bat, which flows into the River Gipping. The Bat is a small stream flowing through Battisford and is also fed by a spring in Badley. This spring is called 'Our Lady Well', which was known as a medicinal or holy well. This well is situated about half a mile south of the church.
The lands in Badley also support the growth of several small woods. Today there are about ten small woods totalling approximately fourteen acres. In 1772 the woodland in Badley amounted to about thirty one acres and it was treated with the care and attention that woodland needs in order to flourish.
At the time of his marriage William had moved and, at the age of 24, was living in Creeting St Mary. The marriage was witnessed by Harriett (?) Cobbold and Eliza Bugg.
The family moved around as evidenced by the birthplaces of their children. In 1873 they were in Creeting St Peter. In 1874 they were living in Rattlesden and then in 1881 the family was living in Battisford and William was a labourer on a farm.(32)
In 1891 William was still labouring on farms but the family was back in Creeting St Peter in Needham Street. They appear to have moved back there around 1883.
In 1901 all the children had left home and William was living with his wife in the parish of Milden Entire at Valley Farm, 1 Sudbury Road. His occupation at this time was 'Farm Baliff, Stockman". William stated that he was working at home so he may have owned the farm.
It also appears his brother James was living with them. James was listed as 67 born in Badley, Suffolk. James' occupation was listed as an agricultural labourer.
He married Rosetta COBBOLD, 20 Dec 1872(81) in Creeting St Mary, Suffolk, England.
3 Rosetta(32) COBBOLD(71). Born Approx 1851(32) in Battisford, Suffolk, England. Died After 1902 in Suffolk, England. Occupation Housewife. Rosetta was the daughter of Henry Cobbold, a labourer, and Sarah Abbott. Rosetta's father's name was obtained from her marriage cartificate. Her mother's name was obtained from census information which only lists one Henry Cobbold. It is not known if she had any brothers or sisters.
She was 22 when she married. At the 1881 census she had given birth to three children, Sarah, George and Matilda.
By 1891 Rosetta had expanded her family with another three daughters, Ellen, Margaret and Alice.
In 1901 Rosetta was living with her Husband and Brother-in-law.
---------------------------------------- 4 Stephen(81) BUGG. Born Approx 1811(32) in Barking, Suffolk, England. Died 26 Aug 1883(100) in Battisford, Suffolk, England. Occupation Labourer(81).
Stephen was born in Barking which is about 3 miles south-south-east of Stowmarket. It is not known who his parent's were or if he had any brothers or sisters.
It is not known exactly where or when he married.
Based on birth places of his children it appears that in 1832 Stephen and his wife were living in Barking and then around 1836 the family moved to Badley. Badley is about 1.5 miles north west of Barking.
In 1851 he and his wife, Mary, had four children, Stephen, James, Mary and William. They were still living in Badley at this time(32).
In 1881 Stephen and his wife were living in Battisford(32), which is about two miles south west of Badley.
Stephen died from a disease of the liver and jaundice which he had suffered from for three months.(100)
He married Mary Ann, Approx 1832(32) in England.
5 Mary Ann(32). Born Approx 1809(32) in Stowmarket, Suffolk, England. Died 7 Mar 1893(95) in Needham Market, Suffolk, England. Occupation Housewife.
Mary was born in Stowmarket(32) . It is not known who her parent's were or if she had any brothers or sisters.
In 1851 she was living with her husband Stephen and her four children, Stephen, James, Mary and William.
In 1881 she was living with her husband in Battisford.
Mary Ann passed away in 1893 from old age. Her son James was present at her death. She was 84.
6 Henry(81) COBBOLD. Born Approx 1830(32) in Battisford, Suffolk, England(32). Died After 1902(32) in England. Occupation Labourer(81). Education Illiterate(101). Religion Church of England(101).
Henry was the son of Thomas Cobbold, a labourer. His mother's name is not known. Henry's father's name was obtained from his marriage certificate. It is not known if he had any brothers or sisters.
Henry married Sarah Abbott in 1852 possibly after the birth of their first child. It would appear that they were living together before being married as they were listed as husband and wife in the 1851 census. The ceremony was performed in Battisford, which was listed as his place of residence by a minister whose first name was Edward. His surname was unreadable. The witnesses of the wedding are difficult to read but appear to be William Garnhams and Sarah Welhams.
In 1881, 1891 and 1901 they were listed together without any children. It is assumed in the years between 1851 and 1891 the children were married and moved away.
For the whole of this time however, Henry and Sarah lived in the small village of Battisford. In 1891 the total number of families living there was just xxx.
In 1851 he listed his occupation as a general labourer but he had started working on farms as of the 1881 census. In 1901 he listed his occupation as a stockman on a farm.
He married Sarah ABBOTT, 11 Aug 1852(101) in Battisford, Suffolk, England.
7 Sarah(32) ABBOTT(101). Born Approx 1833(32) in Needham Market, Suffolk, England. Died After 1902(32) in England. Occupation Housewife. Education Illiterate(101). Religion Church of England(101).
Sarah's surname is believed to be ABBOTT as she married the only Henry Cobbold listed in the 1851 census for Bosmere, Suffolk. She was the daughter of Edward Abbott, a labourer, and Harriett Mount. Sarah's father's name was obtained from her marriage certificate. Her mother's forename was obtained from 1851 census information which only lists one Edward Abbott. A search of the IGI revealed a marriage between Edward Abbott and Harriett Mount at approximately the correct date. They are possibly the parents of Sarah. Assuming this is correct the 1851 census indicates that she had at least one younger brother and sister.
Sarah married Henry Cobbold in 1852 possibly after the birth of their first child. It would appear that they were living together before being married as they were listed as husband and wife in the 1851 census. The ceremony was performed in Battisford, which was listed as her place of residence by a minister whose first name was Edward. His surname was unreadable. The witnesses of the wedding are difficult to read but appear to be William Garnhams and Sarah Welhams.
Sarah listed her place of birth as Wickammarket in 1851 but Needham Market in 1881 and 1891.
She lived with her husband in Battisford which is a small village from at least 1851 until at least 1901.
