Kelowna Street Names, Their Origins, A Brief History.

Weddell Place, named in honour of the Weddell family who were early pioneers. Edwin Weddell came to the Mission in 1891, settling in Kelowna the next year. Born in Scotland, he emigrated to Canada in 1884. He married Lottie Jane Coryell in Ontario and was urged by her brothers, one of whom surveyed the townsites of Kelowna and Penticton, to come out West. In 1893, Bernard Lequime, Clinton Atwood and Edwin Weddell became partners in the business of general merchants both in Kelowna and Okanagan Mission. The firm was named "Lequime Brothers and Co.". Weddell sold out his interest to Bernard Lequime in 1912. Tragedy struck the family in 1895, when the young mother died, leaving four young children. Miss Mary Bloomfield, a cousin of the Atwoods and of Billy Barlee, came out from Ontario to look after the children. In 1896, Mary was married to Edwin by Archdeacon Thomas Green. Four children blessed this second marriage. Edwin Weddell was appointed Police and Stipendiary Magistrate and Special Examiner of the Supreme Court, holding these positions until he died in 1929. He also was the Secretary-Treasurer of the Hospital and School Board. The eight children, grandchildren and great grandchildren, many of whom still live in the Kelowna District have made a great contribution to our local history.
