bullet  General Notes:

According to the census material, William Childs was the butler for retired Captain John Kennedy from at least 1871, 1881, and 1891. It is possible that William Childs might have been in military service with Captain John Kennedy....

The 1901 census for Captain John Kennedy shows a new younger butler by the name of Thomas M Darley, age 34 while William Childs is now the butler for John H Arkwright, age 67, Hampton Court, Herefordshire.

October 25, 2005. An interview with Victor Childs finds that his grandfather William Childs owned a small pub near Leominster at the end of his life. This is proven out to be the "Englands Gate Inn" in Bodenham, Herefordshire, just a few miles south of Leominster as per the death registration of William's wife Jane in 1908.

The 1879 Kelly's Directory of Bodenham indicates that perhaps Wm. Purchase was the proprietor of England's Gate Inn.
(Purchase, Wm., England's Gate, & farmer)

The 1913 Kelly's Directory of Bodenham would indicate that the England's Gate Inn was taken over by Charles Francis Chilman after the 1913 death of William Childs.
(Chilman, Charles Francis, England's Gate Inn)

Note that the cemetery transcriptions indicate an age of 66 for the death of William Childs in Bodenham, Herefordshire, indicating a birth of 1847-1848.

Search for death registration for William Childs.
According the death registration of his wife Jane , William was still alive in 1908.
According the marriage registration of his son John, he was deceased before June of 1915.
So. searching deaths on the 1837 On-line site starting at 1908.
Found this one:

William Childs, death registered in Leominster, March qtr, 1913, age 66, volume 6a, page 734
which should do it.

Ordered from GRO October 29/05.
arrived November 11/2005, arrived all ok.
Occupation: "Licensed Victualler", England's Gate Inn, Bodenham, Hereford
Informant: John Childs which would have been Victor Child's father.
The occupation of William matches knowledge by Victor Childs that his grandfather William Childs had a pub in Herefordshire after his days of being a professional butler.

CHILDS , William
registered in Beaminster vol 8 , page 9

(ordered same July 3, 2005.. jca)
received same on July 8, 2005 but do not believe that it is our William Childs as the birthplace shown on this birth registration (Melbury Osmond, Dorset) matches another William Childs found on the 1861 with his widowed mother mother Mary , then in 1871 with his sister Charlotte Pitcher and is working as a labourer in Melbury, Osmond.

The marriage registration of William Childs and Jane Eliza Etty of 1869 might have clarified the situation, unfortunately, on their 1869 marriage registration, the father of William Childs is shown as "Deceased" with no name given.. jca

Childs, William
registration district: Beaminster, vol 8, page 6b
This birth reg was received on Oct 17, 2005 and was able to show that he is not our William Childs
as this one was born in Melbury Osmond, Dorset and is still with his mother in 1861 and is living with his sister on the 1871 census and is still in Melbury Osmond.
This birth registration is the same one as described earlier as 1845 Beaminster, vol 8, page 9. The original copy of this age of the GRO indexes is very unclear and various interpretations of that entry have been made on published indexes.

Here is another possibility....

Births, registration September qtr, 1847
Childs, William
registration district: Beaminster, vol 8, page 5
ordered Oct 17, 2005 from GRO.
arrived Oct 25, 2005
found : William Childs, born 7th June, 1847, in Evershot, Dorsetshire. father: William Childs, occ: Labourer, mother: Elizabeth Childs, formerly Palmer, Informant: Elizabeth Childs , mother, residence: Evershot.
This birth registration looks particularly good as our William Childs names his first born daughter "Elizabeth" and his first born son "William" as per the census records of 1871 and 1881 of our William Childs, a professional butler.

Further research of the 1851 census takings of Evershot, Dorset pointed to a family of William and Elizabeth Childs with a 3 year old William Childs born in Evershot. This was very tempting to indicate the parentage of "our William Childs", born about 1847.

It proved out however, that this same family of (William and Elizabeth ) in 1871 Evershot census shows this particular son William to be with his parents and also married to an Abigail and had a family of his own, SO CLEARLY ISN'T "OUR" William Childs who became a professional butler (as per 1871 census) and later a publican .

(but the date and location looks so good!) recheck it again......April 2006.. jca)

Here is another possibility for the Dorset birth of our William Childs
Births Jun 1843
Childs William, registered in Bridport, vol 8, page 35

It seems a bit early but should be checked.
Ordered this one from the GRO on (Dec 7, 2005)
No , didnt check out either.

No deaths for any William Childs were found recorded on FreeBMD for Bridport between 1843 and 1851.
Now looking for an 1851 census record which might match up with this particular William Childs.
There appears to be a complete absence of any Childs in Bridport on the 1851 census..
________________________________

November 14, 2005
This 1851 census record in Evershot is of particular interest as it indicates a 5 year old William Childs living with his grand parents and being born in nearby Corscombe. This age of 5 years in 1851 would agree with the age of 25 and 35 years that our William Childs indicates in the census takings of 1871 and 1881. Further research is being taken to see if this William Childs is reasonable to be the same person as our professional butler and a publican in later years.

1851 census, Evershot,Dorset, page 22, family 26
David Childs, Head, marrried, male, age 52, Ag. Lab, born Dorset, Evershot
Esther -, Wife, married , female, age 57, born ", "
John -, ", Son, unmarried, male, age 16, Ag Lab, born Dorset, Corscombe
Emma -', daur, unmarried, female, age 12, Scholar, born ", "
William -", Grandson, male, age 5, born ", "

and this 1861 census could be the same child

1861, North Wootton, Dorset, page 5, family 10
William Gillard, Head, married, male, age 31, Agricultural Labourer, born Dorset, North Wootton
Harriet ", wife, married, female, age 29, born ", Evershot
Edith ", daur, female, age 9 months, born ", North Wootton
William Childs, nephew, male, age 15, born ", Evershot

(as of April 2006, the William Childs shown above here as age 15, born Evershot and living with William and (aunt) Harriet Gillard is by far the most likely source of our William Childs to date... jca)

Note that in 1901, William Childs was the Butler at Hampton Court, Herefordshire..
"Hampton Court, Herefordshire is a castle on the meadows of the river Lugg, backed by a steep wooded escarpment and surrounded by woodland and grounds of 1,000 acres. Founded by King Henry in the early 15th century the castle has been completely restored.
The Van Kampen Gardens at Hampton Court are spectacular and although a recent development, are now receiving national recognition."
