bullet  General Notes:

Copy of letter from Richard and James Rutherford to the Adminstrator of the Province of Upper Canada, dated 23 October, 1817

To His Honor Samuel Smith, Esquire, Administrator of Govenment of the Province of Upper Canada, etc, etc.

In Council

The petition of Richard Rutherford and James Rutherford, Brothers, late from the County of Northumberland in England, now of the Township of Hope, Upper Canada, Humbly therewith.
That your Petitionners desirous of obtaining lands in The Province of Upper Canada procurred letters from His Majesty's Secretary of State for the Colonial Department granting them permision to proceed to this country with letters, and authorising them to receive grants of land upon their arrival.
But they, through ignorance and by the foolish advise of some fellow passengers have left their papers with the Quarter Master General in Quebec thinking at first to settle somewhere about the river Rideau but not liking that situation on viewing it and being very desirous of obtaining a Location the Township of Monaghan near Wm. Fothergill, they humbly pray your honor will be pleased to grant them such an allotment in that Township as you may deem proper.

....and your Petitioners will ever pray, etc etc..

IN MEMORY OF RICHARD RUTHERFORD
written by John Rutherford,(1840- 1922), son of Richard Rutherford

Born in Northumberland, England near the border of Scotland. His occupation was a shephard, herding his sheep on the Hills of Cheviot in Scotland. He emmigrated to Canada in the year (1817?) by sailing vessel on the ocean six weeks. Landed at Quebec- sailed up St. Lawrence River into Lake Ontario, Landed at a Port called Coburg, on Lake Ontario, from there he travelled West into the County of Northumberland and Durham (to) Town of South Monaghan where he located 100 acres as a homestead. Built him a log house- cleared several acres. For ten years he worked on his land clearing off- then returned to England for a Partner in Life.

( see Richard Rutherford for full details of text)

In this time two of his brothers, James and Walter, had joined him from England. Walter met with an accident which proved fatal and was buried on the homestead- there being no Public Place within miles. James, his other brother, some years after was interred there with several other relations. My Father, who passed away in the year 1852 and Mother in (?) 1856- Both Laid away on the Old Homestead. It makes the Old Home sacred to Memory when we look back and think of the Joys and Sorrows that was spent on the Old homestead

Jim,
I have Rachael as the wife of James (Rutherford). James was a brother of Richard. Walter was a third brother that have very little information about, but if my memory serves me, somewhere along the line I was told he was killed in Canada by a falling tree, although I've never found records to verify this.
My records for James and Rachael show a daughter Lilley, Mary, Walter, John, Margaret, Rachael.
