Former Onalaska alderman dies 1977

Howard L. Westerhouse, 75, of 135 2nd Ave. No. a former Onalaska alderman died Monday Aug. 15 at his home. Westerhouse was a 2nd ward alderman in 1936 and 1937 and 1st Ward alderman in 1950. He was born May 4, 1902 in New Amsterdam to Garrett and Anna Westerhouse. He married Nellie Dahlby in Onalaska on June 8, 1926. Before his retirement he was a salesman for the T. C. Esser Glass Co. He was a member of Onalaska Masonic Lodge 214 F & A M and the Low Twelve Club.

Survivors are two daughters, Mrs. Wallace [Nancy] Tolvstad of Onalaska and Mrs. Virgil [Barbara] Thompson of Cottonwood, Minn; four grandchildren; and a sister, Mrs. A. B. [Ella] Hanson of Pigeon Falls. He was preceded in death by his wife in 1970 and by five sisters and two brothers.

Services will be at 1:30 P. M. in the Onalaska United Methodist Church with Rev. John McBeth officiating. Burial will be in the Onalaska Cemetery. Friends may call at the Dickinson Funeral Home, Onalaska, Wednesday from 4 to 9 P. M. and at the church Thursday from 12:30 P. M. until the service.

Memorials may be given to the Onalaska United Methodist Church.

That was my Dad's family and the next family, Terpstra, Mrs. was my dad's sister Myrtle. They were living on Brice Praire which is a few miles north and west of Onalaska. There is a small unincorporated town about three or four miles north of Onalaska called Midway and the Terpstra's lived there after leaving the farm. Uncle Owner was on the County Board for years and a town road is named for him O T. My dad also had a sister Kathryn but she died in child birth in 1906, dad was born May 4 1902. Carol had his baptismal certificate framed for me last Christmas. Nov. 29 1903. It is very colorful for being so old and still legible. My grandma Westerhouse was Anna Mulder, born in 1861, her father John came from Holland in 1856 and settled in New Amsterdam. He was a wagon maker and also made coffins and furniture. I knew some Hoogenhous's, they lived in Onalaska, [we played together when we were kids] I am sure they were related but spelled their name with out the E. Westerhouse is Westerhuis in Holland.
