bullet  General Notes:

This was taken from a tape that Cindy Huish made of Harry Joseph Huish speaking to a grade 9 Social Studies class at Chestermere High School , Alberta, in May, 2000.

Lillie and Harry married in Blaenavon, Wales.
Harry had worked in the coal mines of Wales since he was 7 years old and after his marriage and the birth of their first son Frances Charles, Harry came to Canada in 1903 and settled in the Crowsnest Pass with the land given to emmigrants by the C.P.R. He wanted to be a farmer but the land there had only 2 inches of topsoil and the rest was sheer rock. When Lillie came over to join her husband she immediately realized the futility of farming and moved her family into the town of Lumbreck where Harry went back to work in the mines. They had two daughters Olwyn and then Myrtle. ( Olwyn passed away while still a teenager in Calgary near the end of WW 1)
When Frank was only 14 years old (1914) after working as a lampboy he went to work underground as an apprentice miner. The first day underground the Hillcrest Mine blew up. 197 men died that day. Fortunately Frank was in an area that was not affected by the explosion and walked out. Harry was not so fortunate. He was found two days later with a Timber across his back piled with tons of coal. He had two broken hips, a broken pelvis and a broken back. He wound up crippled , bent over almost in two with his legs crossed and walked with a cane for the rest of his life. He was only in his forties.
The family moved to Drumheller and after one year moved to Calgary where both Harry and Frank got a job with the C.P.R.
Because of wartime and the shortage of men Harry was hired on as a clerk and stayed on until he retired at age 62. He passed away at age 77.
Frank worked in Banff for a couple of summers during the depression after marrying Mae Harris and starting their family. But continued with the C.P.R. when times got better.
