My name is Lois Edwards and one line of my ancestors is the Smithson’s.

I found your website on the Rutherford’s – and thought I would like to add some info.
William Rutherford – married Margaret T. Smithson and I agree with the marriage date.

They had 9 children (you were missing one)
Sarah Jane – b. Aug 12, 1860 d. Aug 13, 1895 m. Asa J. Parcels
Margaret Louisa b. Sept 16, 1862
Lucy Elizabeth – b. Jan 29, 1865 d. Mar.8, 1898 m. Alexander Anderson
Annie b. May 7, 1867 d. Mar. 26, 1871 buried Centreville Presbyterian Cemetery, Cavan
Ont. Transcript of cemetery – says age 3 yrs, 10 mos. 19 days.
Mary Adeline – b. Aug. 20, 1869 d. Aug. 22, 1872 buried Centreville Presbyterian
Cemetery (tombstone says name is Addie) age 3 yrs, 2 days
William – b. Nov. 10, 1871 d. Aug 3, 1922 m. Margaret R. Dawson on Oct. 26, 1898
Buried in Little Lake Cemetery, Sec.0, Peterborough, Ont.
Richard Frederick b. Oct. 29, 1873
John P. b. June 3, 1877
Frank Nichol b. Nov. 6, 1881 d. Jul. 17, 1932
I can understand missing Annie – because she died in March – she would not have shown up on the 1871 census. And because she was born before 1869 there is no Birth Vital Statistic.
The two 3 yr. olds who died are buried with their parents in the Centreville Presbyterian Cemetery.

Margaret Smithson – parents were William Smithson, the younger and Sarah Mason. This William sold 200 acres to Richard Rutherford in 1840. (Richard being the father of William Rutherford.) Without checking, I’m pretty sure I have a copy of the instrument from the Land Records. But if memory serves me correct, I think it was Lot no. 6, Concession 3, South Monaghan.

I wonder why Margaret Smithson/Rutherford was not mentioned in her mother’s will?? The “will” is dated Oct. 31, 1893.

William Smithson – parents were William Smithson, the elder and Margaret Davidson – they immigrated to Canada from West Riding Yorkshire, England in 1817. This couple were my great-great-grandparents.
