bullet  General Notes:

The death certificate for her daughter Clara May (Cripps) Laing shows the maiden name of her mother to be Townsend. The interview of Annie Marie's son Herbert W. Cripps in March of 2001 from Kamloops B.C. indicated that the maiden name was Townsley. A follow up with Herbert W. Cripps on March 18, 2001 confirms that the correct name is Townsley.

3 Letter from George MacKinnon of Bracebridge, Ontario, Jan 7, 1980, Letter from George MacKinnon of Bracebridge, Ontario, Jan 7, 1980. States that the father of John Cripps was Amos Cripps and John was one of six brothers, Amos, Jacob, Gideon, John, Joe and Villers and also, not for sure, their father's name was John.

"I recently read a book which was written recently pertaining to the area of Aspdin and I noticed that a John Cripps lived on lot 8, concession 10 in Stisted township in 1878, I believe, but no further relevance was made until your letter revealed that your father was born there.
According to information supplied by my mother's sisters- Mrs William Weathers and Mrs William Brenn- their father Mr. John Cripps, a brother Daniel and two sisters Joanne of somewhere in Oregon and Mary of Garrick, Sask. were descendants of Amos Cripps- one of six brothers- Amos, Jacob, Gideon, John (Jack), Joe, and Villers. The John or Jack of this family I believe was your grandfather and also, not for sure, his father's name was John.
According to my aunt's story of their great grandfather was that he arrived in the U.S. from Ireland to work for the U.P. (Union Pacific.. ed) Railroad- fought in the civil war- came to Toronto (York)- later to Cookstown, Ontario, where he and his sons cut timber for railroad ties at Holland Landing- moved north with his six sons and their wives to a place near Huntsville called Chubb Lake. It was most interesting yesterday listening to my aunts relate the story of the family arriving at Chubb Lake- apparently in one day they cleared some land- planted a garden, built a log house complete with hand split cedar shakes. After living there for a while some or all moved to Aspdin and neighbouring places."

13 Cripps Family, Herbert Cripps, Kamloops, B.C. THE CRIPPS FAMILY
The ancient name of Cripps is one of the oldest English names and is represented by a unique Coat of Arms created many hundreds of years ago, when knights wore armour and required identification the field of battle.

The first Cripps family arrived in America in 1621, several others arrived during the 1700's. One branch of the family came from Yorkshire, England during this time and settled in the New England States. During the American Revolution they moved as United Empire Loyalists to Upper Canada near Brockville, Ontario.

Jack Cripps who married Sarah Dodds lived in Parry Sound, Ont. with sons James and William and daughter Madge. He was what in those days was termed a Riverman who rode the logs down river from where they were harvested.

Son William, when in his late teens, traveled to the Qu'Appelle Valley near Regina, Sask. to work on an uncle's ranch. After a year or two he filed on a homestead near Milestone, Sask. Also, at this time he married Annie Marie Townsley from Parry Sound who had been a close friend since childhood. She had come to Regina, I presume, to keep an eye on William where she was a seamstress in a tailor shop. This experience fitted her very well for the future in fashioning clothes for the family, far from a town on a homestead.

After a few years, William sold the homestead and purchased 480 acres of farm land near Avonlea, Sask. where he farmed until 1919. Their family consisted of four sons and two daughters, namely: Mamie, John, Clara, Herbert, Ernest & Frank. He sold the farm in 1919, prior to the Great Drought and the depression that followed, and purchased a farm south of Clive, Alta. where he farmed until his death.

Herbert, after completing college and a variety of enterprises joined John in Vancouver, B.C. where we taught riding and other equestrian activities at the Lions Gate Riding & Polo Club. There he met Autumn Pontifex, whose family also came from England, near London. A daughter, Daphne Gail was born in 1942, six months prior to Herb being posted overseas with the Canadian Forces, where he spent the next 3 1/2 years.

In 1949 a son Herbert Douglas was born, who, after completing university at U.B.C. took up a position as High School teacher in Summerland, B.C. Soon thereafter he married Linda Marie Logan and their family consists of Mandy Lee, Logan and Taylor. A short history of the family of Herbert William Cripps, born 1911
