ED 154, sheet 12, image 23 of 28. Census taken 29 June, 1900. Both parents born in England, as he was; age 70; says he's married, has been for 28 years [not likely--George Greenwood d. in 1875]; also says in US since 1857, been here for 45 years and is naturalized. It could be that he came to US earlier and went back to Canada, but in any event he is in 1881 ON census, married to Margaret Ann Winch Greenwood. It is very possible that he came to the US about 1855, though he is slippery about numbers, went back to ON (maybe on a visit) and met the Widow Greenwood, moving onto her farm. Marriage Notes:
Mark, or J. Mark Rowles, as he is named on his marriage record (17 March 1879:) to Margaret Ann Greenwood, widow, is definitely the son of John Rowles and Grace Lee, per the marriage info. He is listed as b. in Somersetshire, England, he says he's 42, a bachelor, occupation a miner. She says she's 36 (but she has a 27-year-old married son). Residence when married, Tp. of Wellesley, born East Gwillimbury, Canada, parents Samuel Winch and Elizabeth Fountain (another spelling!). Place of marriage, at the township of Wellesley. [Witnesses are John Martz (Mertz) and Isabella Greenwood, who were probably married about the same time, as they are married on the 1881 census.] He's church of England, she's Methodist. The Rev. Walton Preston, minister of Methodist Church. notes by Barbara Sniffen, Oskosh, WI, March, 2003
