notes by Barbara Sniffen re the marriage registration of Mark Rowles and Margaret Ann (Winch) Greenwood.
Mark, or J. Mark Rowles, as he is named on his marriage record (17 March 1879:) to Margaret Ann Greenwood, widow, is definitely the son of John Rowles and Grace Lee, per the marriage info. He is listed as born in Somersetshire, England, he says he's 42, a bachelor, occupation a miner. She says she's 36 (but she has a 27-year-old married son). Residence when married, Twp. of Wellesley, born East Gwillimbury, Canada, parents Samuel Winch and Elizabeth Fountain (another spelling!). Place of marriage, at the township of Wellesley. [Witnesses are John Martz (Mertz) and Isabella Greenwood, who were probably married about the same time, as they are married on the 1881 census.] He's church of England, she's Methodist. The Rev. Rolls, Mrs Grace Lee, obituary, 1896, Listowel Banner, July 9, 1896. :
A Centenarian Pioneer
At the residence of her son, Mr. T. H. Rolls at the Grand Central Hotel. Listowel on Thursday evening last. The 9th inst., Grace Rolls, died at the patriarchal age of100 years and 8 months. Since the death of her husband 19 years ago. Mrs. Rolls has lived for the most part with her son Richard in Maryboro, spending, however, most of the past winter with Theodore in town. She as during all her long life enjoyed remarkably good health and was active and able to be about almost until the day of her death. For her great age she was a remarkably young looking woman fresh and smart, and did not look to be more than 60 or 70 years old. The history of her life covers the period of the pioneer days of more than one section of Ontario. Her family were the first settlers in the township of Maryboro and four of her sons own farms at the present time in the township. The deceased Grace Lee, was born in Sommersetshire, England on the 22nd day of December 1795. She was married to John Rolls who was a farmer and a native of the same shire. Five of their nine children were born in England and all survive except one son. Mark the eldest son is 78 and is living at Dunseith, Dakota. And although he himself has gone nearly ten years beyond the three score and ten, he is still young looking and an active man. He wrote a letter to his mother which she received a few days before her death in which he enclosed a lock of his hair. showing that he has not yet a gray hair in his head. The next child was the only daughter of the family, Rosetta, Mrs. Henry Greenwood of Moorefield, Ont. The next three son's, Herbert of Moorefield, and Richard and John are well know farmers in the township of Maryboro. Thomas was the first son born after the family emigrated to Canada, 58 years ago, was born near Aurora in the county of York, where the family first settled. He is at present living in Calgary, N.W.T.. The next son, George, is living in Michigan, the next son was Reuben, deceased, then Albert, a farmer living on the 6th line Maryboro, and the youngest son Theodore H. of the Grand Central, Listowel,. The family moved up to Maryboro 48 years ago and homesteaded the first lot on the 4th line of Maryboro, then on the edge of the wilderness. The farm lies on the banks of the Conestoga and in those days both that river and the spring creek were well stocked with trout, and the boys well recollect many a fine string of trout they pulled from their clear waters in the early days. They sold this farm to Aschel Edmunds and bought a farm four miles further up the fourth, owned now by Wm. Cherry. The sons afterwards purchased farms of their own in the township and after the death of her husband in 1877 the old lady kept house on the homestead for some six years. To the last her hearing and sight were good and only the day before her death was talking about the old times in England and in Canada. The funeral took place on Saturday morning last and the remains were interred by the side of her deceased husband at Hollen, six of her grandsons were pall bearers. They were ---- Greenwood, Albert Rolls, --- Rolls, Frances Rolls, Reuben Rolls, Johnson W. Rolls. The service was conducted by the Rev. W. Cooper. Before her death there were five generations of her family, children, grandchildren great grandchildren, great great grandchildren, there are over------ in all living. The deceased was an adherent of the Church of England in religion and was of and amiable and industrious character. She belonged to an era long since gone a link connecting the present with the past. She was a grown woman before there was a railway built in the country and was a grandmother before era of trains with its telegraphs, telephones, and automobile power and after coming to Canada she witnessed one of the most remarkable transformations in the history of any country, the turning of a wilderness into a land of fields, substantial residences----populations, towns.

Attached are the 1851 Census Documents for John & Grace Rolls that list
most of the kids with them, except for Richard, Herbert and Rosetta.
The 2nd Document, named Herbert Rolls, has him and his wife, living near
Henry & Rosetta (Rolls) Greenwood, William & Isabella (Anderson) Greenwood
and David & Jane (Greenwood) Potter (spelled Potis on the Census), and
their famlies. Henry, William and Jane are George Greenwood's Brothers
and Sister.
Seems as though most of the famlies were living in Maryborough Township at
the time of the Census.
I have not found Richard and Hannah (Winch) Rolls yet in 1851. I am still
working on that one. There is a Richard Rawles, but it is just the
Agricultural Census, and no real data. Have some more digging to do.
Hope this helps.
