Joe Robbins came in 1928 with Chance Hazzard, Harry Chapple, Ed Kiltie, and Shortie Galbraith. They tried to cross the Pouce Coupe river on horseback, but the river was too high and swift. Next they tried a raft. With all five on, when they were on-third of the way across, the raft started to whirl in an eddy. Harry jumped to shore and snubbed the rope around a tree. The rest of them jumped off also, not a minute too soon, as the raft broke up almost immediately. The went to Pouce Coupe, got a wagon and came on to Fort St. John, but were held up a the the ferry crossing at Taylor for four days as the river was impassable.

Joe had the first dam, or dug-out in the district. His wife Minnie, whom he went for in 1929, canned 70 quarts of wild strawberries on a camp stove; planted maple trees, raspberries and strawberries, which she got from Mr. Abbot at the Beaverlodge Experimental Station, and was one of the leading gardeners of the district. They built a new house in 1930, and the house-warming which followed was attended by folk from many neighboring communities, and fun there was a-plenty, for all.

Besides farming, Joe Robbins freighted for Donis, to the Fontas. Also, with Dick Hickethier, he freighted for Ernie Petersen, in 1934. Mrs. Robbins was a skilled cupboard-maker, an occupation somewhat unusual for a woman.

Children born to the Robbins were George and Lenore, Hazel and Pearl, Lloyd and Willie. George was a young man and also had land next to Joe.
