WILLIAM ANDERSON OF HOOPLE, HAS BEEN A SUBSCRIBER FOR 49 YEARS

William Anderson of Hoople has been a subscriber to the Grafton News and Times for 49 years, since Sept 22, 1881, when the Acton News was moved to Grafton and became the Grafton News. Mr. Anderson said the other day, while being interviewed at his home in Hopped, that his subscription started with the first issue of the paper at Grafton.

Mr Anderson arrived in Walsh County in the fall of 1879, coming here from Casselton, ND where he, together with his five brothers, had spent the summer. The boys came from Peterboro County, Ontario, where he was born August 17, 1852. The left home in 1878, spending the first year away from home at Winnipeg, where they were employed by the Canadian Pacific Railway Company, and going by boat to Casselton the following spring. That fall they decided to take up land and become farmers. All six of them piled into the stage running between Fargo and Pembina. They knew where they were going and east of Glenwood Township they left the stage and walked to Sweden, which was located close to where Nash is now located. All the land containing timber, along rivers and creeks, was already taken up, Mr Anderson said, most of the settlers being either Norwegians or Swedes. Mr. Anderson was the first to settle on the open prairie in that district.

The following year he had 40 acres in crop, practically all of it in wheat. The grain was hauled either to Acton or Grand Forks, the round trip to the latter place taking four days, while Acton took two days. All the hauling was done by oxen, as there were very few horses in the country at that time. The average load was from 50 to 50 bushels and the price paid per bushel that year was about 80 cents.

The average yield of wheat during the early years was 40 bushels per acre. One fall he was unable to get his wheat threshed and had to wait with this operation until the following spring. However, the yield was still 40 bushels.

His five brothers filed on homesteads close by.

The social activities of the district the first few years were many and varied. Outside of working like slaves during the spring and harvest seasons, the principal occupation of the average settler was to create as much fun as possible. There was a continual visiting among neighbors and there was hardly a dull moment, Mr. Anderson says.

Acquires More Land
Mr. Anderson was a great believer in Walsh County land. He had only farmed a few years when he was able to acquire another quarter. Later on he bought two more and when he quit farming 14 years ago and moved to Hoople to reside, he had over a section of the finest agricultural land in the world, which he still owns.

In 1887 he was married to Miss Elizabeth Woods, the wedding ceremony taking place in Park River, January 26. The couple have three children living, Wilford W. Anderson and Frank, who runs the old homestead, and Mrs. Greta Ann Anderson of Hoople.

All of his brothers, with the exception of Joe, who died at Nash a few years ago, have left the settlement, Richard resides in Seattle and the other three are in Manitoba and Saskatchewan.

Interesting Experience
Pioneering in Glenwood Township was an interesting experience, Mr. Anderson said. It had its hardships at times, but on the whole life among the settlers was pleasant. None had any money to speak of, during the earlier years, but that did not stop them from enjoying life to the utmost. the shacks they lived in during the first years were not palatial mansions like some have now, but for hospitality and friendliness, the present day residences can not equal them. "Yes, pioneering in Glenwood Township was an interesting experience. If I had my choice, I would do it over again," he said.

"I wonder," Mr. Anderson asked, "if the young fellows of today with their expensive cars have as much pleasure and fun as we had driving our oxen and later our 2 horses and buggies. I doubt it."

Mr. and Mrs Anderson are both in the best of health. (1930 Grafton News, ND)

WILLIAM ANDERSON, 80, DIES AT HOOPLE

Pioneer Farmer Came to County in 1879; served On Township and School Boards

William Anderson, who came to Walsh County in 1879 as a lad of 17 with his pioneer parents, passed away Saturday at his home in Hoople after an illness extending over more than a week.
Mr. Anderson's death was due to an accident when he took poison which he mistook for medicine. Every effort was made to save his life when the mistake was discovered, but proved unavailing and he passed away Saturday morning.
Mr. Anderson was born in Peterboro, Ontario, August 17, 1852, the son of Scotch parents. He came to Walsh County in 1879 and located on a homestead in Glenwood Township. He owned this homestead at the time of his death.
During the first few years of his residence in this new country Mr. Anderson and his family experienced all of the hardships which usually befall the pioneer. Friends have heard him recall that 40 acres of wheat were seeded the first year, that a hail storm came along in mid-summer and destroyed the entire crop, except a small portion of about ten acres. The next year, after the crop was seeded and well started, a few nights of cold weather froze most of it out. During the first two years the family lived here their marketing was done in Grand Forks. Mr. Anderson recalls that they paid 20 cents per bushel to have their grain hauled to Grand Forks by team and wagon.
Mr. Anderson was a man who took an active and intelligent interest in all public affairs. For more than 30 years he was a members of his township board and during much of that time served on the school board. About ten years ago he retired from active life and moved to Hoople where he has since lived.
On January 26, 1887, Mr. Anderson was married to Miss Elizabeth Woods, a daughter of Mr. and Mrs. William Woods, another pioneer family. His wife, one daughter and two sons survive him. The sons are Frank and Wilford, both of Hoople, and Mrs. A. Rustan of Nash. Four brothers also survive. They are Alex of Carmen, Man.; James of Preeceville, Sask.; John of Plenty, Sask.; and Richard of Seattle, Wash.
Funeral services were held Monday afternoon and were in charge of Rev. Walter Jardine of Cando. Interment was made in the Hoople cemetery. Pallbearers were Nels Tweten, Gust A. Johson, Gust Johnson, Henry Larson, Andrew Patterson and John Paulson.
