bullet  General Notes:

A search in the census records turns up (so far at least) only this interesting record taken from the 1881 census of Portsea. This 10 year old would appear to be the Emma who later marries Charles Thomas Chittenden in 1888 and who at that time declared herself to be the daughter of William Dixon. jca (see also the 1891 census in Portsea, with William and Emma Wittcomb living next to the Charles and Emma Chittenden family with addresses of #1 and #3, St. Georges Passage, Portsea)

A search of the 1871 census records from Milton, Kent turn up this one for an Emma Dixon living with her grandparents with no evidence of a mother. The 3 year year old William could be Emma's half brother?. jca
A search of the 1881 census does not turn up this Emma Dixon, born about 1869 or 1870 in Milton, Gravesend, Kent, which hints that it could be the same person as our Emma Witcome, age 10, on the 1881 census, in Portsea.

Note that although this census is from Milton, Gravesend, a quick check in the LDS IGI files show that the younger generation here were all born in Milton Next Sittingbourne some 16 miles to the East of Gravesend.

bullet  Research Notes:

The existance of Emma (Dixon) prior to her marriage in 1888 to Charles Thomas Chittenden is still very much in question, as on the birth registration of their son Charles Edward Chittenden, born 26th December 1891 and registered in Portsea Island, her maiden surname was given as Wittcombe.

Further research is continuing on this question... jca. August 22 2005.
