Will of Bathsheba Dysonof Nun Head Peckham 1835.
As Bathsheba is an uncommon name and the IGI only lists one Bathsheba, baptised at St Leonards in 1772, which would make her 63 at death, we can be confident that this is her even though at death she was living in South London. She mentions brothers Henry, Edward, James and Thomas, sisters Sarah, Mary and Betsy Williams, widow, as well as cousin Sarah Tyler (possibly connected to John Tyler who witnessed the will).

The PRs for St Leonards show her as daughter of James and Sarah Dyson and lists their other children as James and Thomas. A search of the IGI for other siblings born in England from 1770-1790 produces some born in Oldham or Northants but none of the right names.

However a James Dyson married Susannah Noden at Bethnal Green in 1789 and had 5 children baptised at St Leonards or the Independent Church, Finsbury
It therefore looks possible that Bathsheba's mother Sarah died sometime after 1781 and that her father then remarried in 1789. He is shown as a widower on the marriage record.

Some comments -

1.No death record for Sarah has been found.

2.James & Sarah married in 1771 so James is likely to have been born before 1751 which would make him 38 at his second marriage and 49 by the time his youngest child was born.

3.Neither marriage records a Henry or a Betsy nor does the IGI give any possible entries anywhere in England to either mother's name. It is therefore possibly that their births either went unrecorded or have not yet been entered on the IGI.

4.I have looked for Betsy's marriage to - Williams but found nothing.

5.We know that Susannah died before Bathsheba made her will and presumably William did too, unless Bathsheba had fallen out with him.

6.I have also looked for a marriage between a Sarah Dyson or Dyer and John Tyler but found nothing. However a Sarah Dyer married Joseph Tyler at St Martin in the Fields in 1816.

What I also find interesting is that Bathsheba left a PCC will, as this implies that she was a person of substance and/or left property in more than one diocese.

She was living at Nun Head -An area to the south of Peckham around the Nun's Head Tavern. Tea-gardens and dancing made this hamlet a summer resort with a fine panorama towards London, but after about 1840 it became more urbanised. (Weinreb: London Encyclopaedia), which sounds fairly affluent. Her legacies amount to £30 plus the residue which may have been considerable and then there is the annuity from her cousin which would capitalise at say £200 and it sounds as if that may not have been its full value. There is no death duty record for her so we do not know the value of her estate but she was obviously a lady of means. This wealth almost certainly came from her father, who is most unlikely to have left all his wealth to one daughter when he had at least two sons and other daughters, so he must have been quite a rich man. It is surprising that there is no PCC will for him.

We have it that he was a brassfounder of Hoxton, which was part of Shoreditch, an area just to the NE of the City of London. It was a separate town in its own right with around 10,000 inhabitants in 1750 and over 3 times that number by 1800. St Leonards is the ancient parish church of Shoreditch. St Mathew was a new church built in 1743 when Bethnal Green which adjoins Shoreditch became a separate parish having formerly been part of Stepney Bethnal Green then had a population of about 15,000 mostly very poor weavers and dyers. Finsbury adjoins Shoreditch on the other (western) side. All are within a mile or so of each other.

Brassfounding does not appear to have been a significant industry of the area and is more associated with Whitechapel further to the east where the famous bell foundry still exists.

The reference to Henry Dyson as a brass worker in the 1841 census is very interesting and indicates that the business continued. It might also mean that Henry was the eldest son, which is corroborated by him being the first mentioned in Bathsheba's will. Perhaps he was born about 1775 as there is a gap of nearly 5 years between Bathsheba's birth in 1772 and her next known sibling.

Edward is presumably the accountant of Wisbech (not born in county) with a wife & 7 children.
There is a Mary Dyson aged 45, a nurse at St Bartholomew's Hospital, listed in 1841 but she is marked as not born in the county. The only other London entry is for Maria Dyson 46, a needleworker of Pleasant Row, Hackney born in county.

Turning to James I tend to agree that Elizabeth Mason must have been his first wife although it would be nice to find her death. I am also puzzled about the names of the eldest & youngest boys ie. Warwick & Boulton or Bolton. We know of no family connections with those names but perhaps they may help us to find some or perhaps they are just random names.

James himself seems to have died before 1841 but his widow Mary Ann, 50, Ind., and 3 children: Sarah 20, Thomas, 15, packer, and Emily 10, are living at Durham Str. Bethnal Green. James 23, cloth drawer is living at Princes Str Bethnal Green and George, 28 fishing tackle maker at Blossom Terrace Shoreditch with Sarah Dyson 26 and Sarah Dyson 3 no doubt his wife and daughter. I have not found the other children; several may have been dead or the girls married.
