CHIPMAN, Clarence Campbell, Hudson’s Bay Co., is the s. of the late John Allan Chipman [ born when?; died before 1881], for many yrs. Postmaster of Amherst, N.S., by his wife, Abbie Brown [born abt 1822 in Nova Scotia; died after 1881].

B. at Amherst, May 24, 1856, he was also ed. there.

He entered the Can. C. S., 1867, and became Private Secy. to Sir Chas. Tupper [born on 2 July 1821 near Amherst, N.S.; died on 30 October 1915 in Bexleyheath, Kent], then Mr. of Rys. and Canals, 1882. In 1884 he accompanied Sir Chas. to Eng., on the latter’s appt. as High Comnr. of Can. in London, and, concurrently with his other duties, performed those of official asst. secy. and accountant.

In 1887 he was entrusted with the supervision of the expenditure in connection with the management of the Can. Sec. at the Ind. and Col. Exhn.
He is the author of a treatise on the fisheries of Can., 1891.

He was appt. Chief Comnr. of the Hudson’s Bay Co., his present position, 1891. He is a mem. of the Ch. of Eng., and has served as a del. to the Provl. and the Gen. Synod. He m. the eld. dau. of R. Borradaile, later Insp. of Inl. Rev., Halifax. – Winnipeg, Man.; Manitoba Club.

There is a village called Chipman, approximately 58 kilmoetres east noth-east of Edmonton, Alberta. The Canadian Northern Railway established a siding and townsite here in 1905 and a post office opened here in May 1905. It was named after Clarence. It was incoporated as a village on 21 October 1913.
