Note that the name of "Hudson" percolates through a number of the birth and death registrations received from the GRO for the Pickering family, as per the birth registration of John Hudson Pickering, 1845; the death registration of William Pickering in 1876 where the informant was brother-in-Law John Hudson and the death registration of the widow Hannah Pickering in 1889 where the informant was a nephew John George Hudson. (likely the son of the previous John Hudson shown on the death reg of William Pickering in 1876).

bullet  Research Notes:

So far , (as of May 2006), the search of the 1851 indexed census records of Scotland have failed to turn up the family of William and Hannah Pickering with young children. ... perhaps they show up in England on the 1851 after all..?? jca but a thorough search of the 1851 England census, fails to find them as well.. Did they miss the 1851 entirely?? I am quite convinced that this family was missed by the 1851 census.... jca

An index of all residents of Penrith in the 1851 census produced the by Cumbria Family History Society shows the names of the following Pickering residents..

PICKERING Ann : Ann : Ann : Elizabeth : Hannah : Jane : John : John : John : Joseph : Mary : Mary : Robert : Robert : Thomas : Thomas: : William

Note that it is entirely possible that this short list includes our family of:
William and Hannah Pickering with children Thomas and Elizabeth and hopefully John..
This 1851 census could be viewed in detail on the LDS FHL film #87105 Enum Dist. 8a - 8j )

January 12, 2005, The 1851 census for Penrith was examined in detail and our family of William and Hannah Pickering were not present in Penrith at that time.. They were likely stil in Perth, Scotland. jca

1861 census is contained on film #543204 .
Jan 11, 2005, located the family of William and Hannah Pickering with their four children on page 65 of the 1861 Penrith cenus..

The 1841 Penrith census would also be very interesting.
Jan 12, 2005. searched 1841 census and did find a William Pickering , age 15 in the household of Physician John Taylor on page 15. On page 23 was a Jane Pickering age 20

[The Cumbria Directory, 2004]
High Hesket, Cumberland
High Hesket is a small group of houses, a school, an inn, and a church strung along the A6 road north of Penrith.
St Mary's church is made up of varying features from different centuries. The arched windows of the nave date from 1720, while the east and north aisles are from Victorian times. The chancel arch is 13th / 14th century. Features include a 17th century double bellcote and 18th century west porch. Bodies of people who died from the plague were sent here from Carlisle for burial; the church was built on the site as a direct result. A mausoleum of the Parker family lies in the churchyard.
Farming is the main occupation in the surrounding countryside. A nearby 100-acre lake, Wadling tarn, is a carp fishing site. A castle, Hewin, once lay on the north-east shore, but its remains have vanished. It was supposedly a stronghold of Swaine, a Cumberland king. Viking arms were discovered near the village inn.

Note:
On the marriage registration for Elizabeth Jane Pickering (1883), her father William was described as an Accountant.. this should be a valuable clue to help locate William Pickering on the census records..The occupation given for William Pickering at the marriage of his son Thomas William Pickering (1877) was "Woolstapler".

Woolstapler. A merchant who buys wool from the producer, grades it, and sells it to the manufacturer.

Finally located William Pickering and his wife Hannah and family on the 1871 census, in Penrith, Cumberland., England, age 48, occupation: Wool Stapler and Weigh Master...... (Nov 27, 2004)

bullet  Marriage Notes:

Searched the GRO indexes from 1842- 1848 looking for any William Pickering or Hannah Hudson marriage registered in Penrith at this time.. Not even one found....(Dec 7, 2004) so maybe they eloped??. or married prior to 1842?
______________________________________________

The search for the marriage registration for William Pickering and Hannah Hudson has proven to be a problem with an extensive search of the GRO indexes from mid 1840 to mid 1848 without finding a match up.
One marriage record that does look interesting however is this one from Penrith, Cumberland in 1840 and should be ordered to see if it is perhaps an earlier marriage of our William Pickering. No other Pickering marriages were noted in Penrith during this time period other than an Ann Pickering, December of 1846 in Penrith.

Name: PICKERING, William
Record Type: Marriages
Quarter: September
Year: 1840 District: Penrith
County: Cumberland
Volume: 25 Page: 107

ordered this registration from the GRO on Dec 26/2004 and received January 25, 2005. Marriage date: Sept 2, 1840. This William Pickering was a widower, a Mason, residing in Skelton, Cumberland and his father was John Pickering , also a Mason. The marriage was to Mary Wilkinson, a spinster, residing in Penrith and her father was William Wilkinson, a labourer..
Both of full age..I do not think that this is our William Pickering... jca

A decent search through the parish registers for St. Andrew's church on LDS film 1472086 still failed to turn up a marriage of William Pickering and Hannah Hudson. It would appear that they either married in a different local or married outside the Church of England. Perhaps even in Scotland as William worked for the Railway.
