Runcorn Weekly News, Cheshire, October 7, 1905 , page 9

RUNCORN HILL MYSTERY - 'A Weston Clerk's lonely death'. Mr Robert Dobson,
Coroner, Conducted an inquiry at the Runcorn Court House on Friday, into the
circumstances surrounding the death of Thomas William Pickering, a clerk, 55
Years of age, and residing at Prospect House, Weston, who was found that
morning lying dead in what is known locally as the "Gullet", on Runcorn
Hill. Mr Joseph Henderson was foreman of the jury and Inspector Egerton
superintended the police arrangements.
Frances Pickering desposed that deceased was her husband. He was a Clerk but
lately had been out of a situation. She last saw him alive at five o'clock
on the previous morning when he left the house to seek work. He was quite
well. At night he had not returned home, but the household went to bed as
usual, leaving the door on the latch so he might get in. It was her practice
of late to leave the door thus fastened as he had been late just recently
owing to his having been out looking for work.
Coroner: I don't wish to ask you anything that would be painful to you but
was your husband a sober man?
Pickering: He was not a teetotaller but always steady. I have no reason that
he was in drink last night.
In answer to further questions by the Coroner, witness said she did not miss
her husband until that morning. At half-past six she was informed by a
neighbour of what had happened and subsequently the police came. She went to
the spot and saw the deceased man lying there.
John Smith. Labourer Common Cottages, Runcorn, said that about 5.45am that
morning he was going along the Gullet to his work when he saw the deceased
lying there. He told a young fellow named Jack Warder, who informed the
police and witness stayed until they arrived. Deceased's head was covered in
blood and there was a terrible wound in the skull at the back. There was no
signs of any struggle and he was quite dead.
Coroner: is this "gullet" a narrow place with rock on both sides?
Witness: Yes.
Were you walking along the top or the bottom? Bottom. Assuming for the
moment that the deceased had fallen from above; Is there a road there? I
can't say it's a regular footpath, but I have seen people walking on the
top. Anyone would be trespassing? Oh no, it's on Runcorn Hill, which is
quite open.
Mr Bankes, a Juror: It's a public place, part of the park.
Coroner: Suppose anyone walking along the top in the dark might easily fall
down? Yes. And this part of Runcorn Hill is the Park? Yes. Does it belong to
the Runcorn Urban District Council? I couldn't say.
Mr Bankes: Yes, it does.
Mr Bankes (to witness). Do you think the deceased had fallen? Yes.
Coroner: Why do you think so? On account of the position in which he was
lying.
Constable Bratt (stationed at Weston) said he received the information of
the affair at six o'clock, and went to the scene. He was sure the deceased
had fallen from above, which would be 12 to 13 feet. There was no sign of a
struggle. He examined the ground on top and found the ferns leaning forward
over the opening, which strengthened the theory that deceased had slipped
down. Deceased was quite rigid and appeared to have been lying there for
some hours. He was lying on his back. His skull was fractured at the back
and witness thought he must have alighted on his head.
Inspector Egerton: How far would he have to go from the road to get to this
place? About 200 yards. It is at the back of the fever hospital.
Coroner: Is it a public place. Yes. Not enclosed in any way? No.
Replying to the Coroner, witness said deceased must have been making his way
from Runcorn to Weston, and took his course across the Hill for the
shortest.
The Coroner, in directing the jury, said they would have little difficulty
in arriving at a verdict. The supposition that the deceased was going home
along the top of the gullet and accidentally fell over was quite feasible.
One thing he would like to draw their attention to was that this place was
not fenced in any way. They knew the place better than himself and would
know whether fencing was possible and necessary. Should they say so they
could recommend that the local authority be communicated with.
The Jury returned a verdict of "Accidental Death" and made no recommendation
with reference to the fencing.

__________________________________________________________
My current thought is that Thomas William Pickering and his wife Frances Tinsley ended up in Cheshire after their marriage in 1877 as a result of the Tinsley family living in Cheshire. The sister to Thomas , Elizabeth Pickering also was married (to the brother-in-law of Thomas Pickering, Geroge Tinsley) in Cheshire. But perhaps the rest (if any) of the family remained in Scotland where Thomas and his sister Elizabeth were born.
_______________________________________________________________
note : sister Elizabeth Jane Pickering indicates that she was born in Perthshire, Scotland as per the 1881 Runcorn, Cheshire census. so it is possible that brother Thomas William Pickering born there as well. ...note by jca

note: It is clear that Elizabeth J. Pickering is the older sister to Thomas William Pickering, in as much as they are both in Runcorn, Cheshire on the 1881 census, both born in Scotland and only 2 years apart in age,

AND... Elizabeth Jane Pickering is a witness to the marriage of Thomas William Pickering in 1887.
AND.. Both show father's name= William Pickering on their marriage registrations.

Later (17 June 1883) Elizabeth Jane Pickering marries George Tinsley, the brother-in-law of Thomas William Pickering.. brother and sister married sister and brother. very nice....

Thomas married Frances Tinsley, daughter of George Tinsley and Amelia Green, on 27 Sep 1877 in Parish of Rochdale, Lancashire, England.7 (Frances Tinsley was born on 10 Jan 1853 in Weston in Runcorn, Cheshire, England 7 13 15 23 24 and died after 1905.)

bullet  Marriage Notes:

Note the witness to the marriage of Thomas William Pickering and Frances Tinsley: one Elizabeth Jane Pickering. surely a sister to Thomas Pickering. The 1881 census records for the village of Runcorn recorded Elizabeth J Pickering , age 33, living unmarried , and working as a Cook Servant, born in Perth, Scotland, which will be a big help in locating the family earlier in Scotland. note by jc anderson
