bullet  Research Notes:

Family of Hugh McKinven & Marion Lindsay (notes written by Dave MacKinven of Auckland, N.Z.)

I have realized that the Alexander I had recorded to this family is in fact incorrect. The Alexander I had attached to the family was in fact an Alexander born to Hugh's brother Archibald. When I had initially made up the family group I was working from the index entry for the 1891 Census and it was only on reading the full census entry from your site that I noted my error. I searched through all the Birth indexes I have on file and there was no Alexander that fitted the bill. I was online at the Origins site doing some other research and took the opportunity to delve a little further. A wild card search to ascertain if the entry had been recorded under a variant in the indexes produced no likely results. The penny then dropped!! According to the census info based on the age given for Alexander he was born prior to the marriage of Hugh & Marion and thus was likely to have been registered under his mothers maiden name. A subsequent search proved this.

I list below the birth index entries for the children I have recorded for the family. You will note the entry for Charles, a twin for Mary Agnes.

Death entries I have recorded for children of the family are as below. Given the registration entry numbers I would make the assumption that Charles died very shortly after birth.

Another entry that I will put in front of you is the following.

SexAgeYearSurnameForenameMaiden SurnameDistrictCountyGRO1GRO2GRO3

This is a death entry from the same area as the death for Hugh was recorded. To my knowledge at that time there were no other McKinven families living in the area. A cross match search as revealed that the entry is also recorded under the surname Alexander so by deduction she was a McKinven who married an Alexander or visa versa.
Just in case you come across anything that may fit. Could well be the wife of Alexander

Kirkcudbrightshire

"Commonly called a Stewartry, but in reality and to all intents and purposes a sheriffdom or shire, lies in the south of Scotland, and forms the eastern and by far the most extensive portion of the ancient district of Galloway. It is bounded by Dumfries-shire on the east and north-east, on the south by the Solway Frith and the Irish Sea, by the county of Ayr on the north and northwest, and by Wigtonshire (or Western Galloway) on the west. In extent it measures, from south-east to north-west, about forty four miles, by breadth varying from twenty to thirty miles, the narrowest part being toward its north-western limits....
The aspect of the country, however, forms a very natural distinction into two divisons: if a line be drawn from the centre of Kirkpatrick-Iron-Gray parish to the Gatehouse of Fleet, all to the northwest, with little exception, is so mountainous, that it may be termed a Highland district; while the south and eastern parts exhibt a fine champagne and cultivated country - a contrast strikingly obvious...
The number of horses, cattle and sheep reared in the county is sufficiently large to evince the possession of much practical knowledge, and consequent success, in this branch of the productive economy; and the breed of swine has increased to a prodigious extent, these animals being now a staple commodity both for home consumption and exportation....
The shire, or stewartry, comprises twenty-eight parishes and contains two royal burghs, Kirkcudbright and New Galloway...."
County Description from Pigot's Directory, 1837

Colvend and Southwick

The united parishes of Colvend and Southwick, now known as Colvend, though the ancient boundaries of the two are still preserved by the inhabitants, are situated on the western shore of the Solway Firth....
It is about eight miles in length and five in breadth, and is bounded on the east by the Solway Frith and the parish of Kirkbean; on the west by the parish of Buittle and the estuary of the Urr; on the north by the parishes of Urr , Kirkgunzeon , and New Abbey; and on the south by the Solway Frith.....
The industry of the parish is almost entirely connected with agriculture, the most of the population being farmers. The tradesmen are chiefly employed in making and repairing agricultural implements. Formerly there was a considerable amount of shipbuilding and mending at Kippford, but this has declined to very small proportions with the decline of the coastal trade, caused by the construction of railways in Galloway....
The Rev. James Little wrote in 1794 - "that the great staple of the fisheries were cod, of which large quantities, and some of excellent quality, are taken here and carried to Dumfries and neighboring smaller towns....
Of shell-fish large quantities of cockles and mussels are found on the coast; also shrimps, whelks, and other smaller kinds of little value."
Handbook of The United Parishes of Colvend and Southwick, W.R. M'Diarmid, 2nd Edition, 1895, Reprinted 1992
