bullet  General Notes:

Letter from Hazel Anderson of Toronto, Ontario to James C. Anderson, dated July 31, 1976.

"Another item I have about Catherine Kennedy is that she had a brother John who worked for the Government, and he was evidently in Canada before them. He was the one who was instrumental in getting the Andersons and several other families with whom they had become friendly to move from Beckwith Township to South Monaghan, where he owned some better land. Catherine also had a sister Helen, who was married to a William Anderson, but as far as we know the two Anderson men were not related. Somewhere in my multitude of notes I have a list of the children of Helen and William. These were given to me by a descendant of theirs who lived in the Port Arthur or Thunder Bay area. I was not able to trace any really definite relationship between us from the information she sent, except that Helen was a sister of our Great Grandmother Katherine or Catherine. "

Note by James C. Anderson. Note that the 1820, 1821, and the 1822 census records for Beckwith twp, in Lanark County all show a John Kennedy, a single male. Could this be the John Kennedy to whom Hazel Anderson was referring?

note by James C. Anderson... this entry for George Kennedy is most interesting as it ties Ellen Anderson to the Kennedy family as noted by the letter from Hazel Anderson to James C. Anderson dated July 31, 1976.. It appears that young George Kennedy , age 7, was visiting the Andersons during the census taking. I must check out the census for Cobourg, Ontario for 1861.. it should be interesting..jca
Perhaps young George Kennedy is a grandson of the missing brother John Kennedy.

Here is the 1861 census record for young George Kennedy in Cobourg, Ontario.

George Kennedy, b. upper Canada, age 8
Mary E. Kennedy, b. upper Canada, age 10
John Kennedy, b. upper Canada, age 6
on 1/4 acre lot, frame house
________________________________________________________
note: the George Kennedy mentioned on the Cobourg census of 1861(film C1054, page 75, age 8) is for sure the same George Kennedy also picked up on the S. Monaghan census also of 1861 (film C-1055, page 21, age 7) who happened to be visiting William Anderson and wife Ellen who I suspect is his great aunt. quote : "George Kennedy, age 7 , residence Cobourg". It is a pity that mother Julia is a widow. It will make it harder to trace back one more Kennedy generation to where I suspect we will find a John Anderson , the missing brother to Catherine and Ellen or "Helen" Kennedy. jca
A search of the census records for Cobourg for 1861 found only a very few Kennedy's in the quite sizable town. No other Kennedy match was even interesting. jca . the Cobourg records for 1871 are missing so they are of no help.

Back in Scotland a search of the IGI files shows only one likely marriage record between William Anderson and Helen Kennedy but it does show up on three or more different films.. I dont know why this is as I have not yet seen the original films..

Sept 27, 2001, Hi Jim,
Saw your posting on the Family Tree on Ancestry.com. It really caught my attention as I have been trying to find information on Helen Kennedy and William Anderson. I read your notes and found that you referred to a Hazel Anderson. I have letters that she wrote to my great aunt, Bessie Anderson back in 1967. I also have a letter from (looks like) Thomas Anderson from Sth. Monaghan to the same Bessie Anderson in 1924. In both letters there is mention of Catherine Kennedy and Helen Kennedy being sisters. If so, then I can supply you with more information on the William Anderson/Helen Kennedy line if you are interested. It gets complicated, but I shall try to make it understandable. (If you are not interested, you best stop reading now-----grin.)
William Anderson married Helen Kennedy Jan 7, 1827 in Fortingall, Scotland. They had a son born in Scotland in 1829 named Alexander. They came to Canada (Sth Monaghan, Ont.) sometime shortly after that. Once in Canada, they had 4 more children, all girls. Christy b. 1832 - d. 1920 - buried in Chesley, Ont.
Ellen b. 1835 - d. 1911 - buried in Chesley, Ont.
Annie b. 1837 - d. 1903 - buried in Chesley, Ont.
Catherine b. 1840 or 41 - d 1920 - buried in Chesley, Ont.
Their brother Alex is buried in Chesley also, alongside them. On his tombstone it says he died May 24, 1883 at age 53. From letters that we have from past generations, it appears he drowned.
According to the Bruce Atlas, 1880, William Anderson (married to Helen Kennedy) and Alexander Anderson (married to Catherine Kennedy) owned farms beside each other in Sth Monaghan. I do not believe that this William and Alexander were related in any way except that they married sisters. So, now saying, I shall proceed to William Anderson, who I am a gggg niece of. William was born in Weem, Scotland to John Anderson and Annie Campbell. He was christened July 4, 1800 in the Weem Parish. He had a number of siblings but one in particular was a Donald Anderson, his brother, who I am a direct descendant of. Donald had a number of children also, among them 3 boys named John, Duncan and William. To keep it straight, these 3 boys were William Anderson (and Helen Kennedy's) nephews. Have I lost you yet? These 3 nephews came to Canada. John was my great great grandfather, and Duncan married Annie Anderson (daughter of William Anderson and Helen Kennedy.) Seeing as how William Anderson and Helen Kennedy were Duncan's uncle and aunt, that means when he married their daughter Annie, he married his cousin.

I am stopping here. There are more children for a few of the above, but I only listed ones I am directly descended from to show where I fit in. I have no proof that Helen & Catherine were sisters, other than the letters I have mentioned. It could be that this whole scenario is out to lunch. I am trying to get hold of death records, etc. of William and Helen to see if the names of their parents or somebody are on them in order to confirm all this.
. Now that I have really confused you, may I ask where you descended from? If you have been able to actually read through all this and have made it this far, it would really be great to hear from you.
