bullet  General Notes:

Marion was a teacher for 25 straight years after raising her kids. She ended her career as a teacher of the fourth grade in the Wilton School. Overall her teaching spanned 46 years. She said she preferred teaching in rural schools because "there is a closeness in small country schools that you do not find in other systems."

After graduating from Onalaska High in 1921 she went to LaCrosse Normal School (now UW LaCrosse) for a summer and a semester, and passed the test required for teaching. Then she got a call from a school near Kendall. She is quoted as saying "Where in the world is Kendall?". At the end of her first year there she met her husband to be. She gave up teaching then to become a farmer's wife.

In her later years she broke a hip and had to give up the cross country skiing she dearly loved. She also served on the board of the Monroe County Services for Aging. In these later years she enjoyed playing a card game with her friends called Pheiffer.

When she was a student at Onalaska high, her and her classmate Flora Brooks were guards on the girls' basketball team. They wore bloomers and middy blouses with big ties. They practiced and played in a barn near the Agricultural School. She said "There wasn't any heat in the barn but we had a winning team, I'll tell you." Once Marion jumped out of the Library window and sprained her ankle. She said "There was this boy out in the hall that I didn't want to see, so I jumped out the window." Luckily the library was on the first floor.
