Some notes on Marit Nielsdtr to satisfy myself (James C. Anderson of Kelowna B.C. ) that the selection of Marit Nielsdtr. in my family tree was indeed the correct Marit Nielsdtr. from my notes from 1982 and 1986.

Marit Nielsdtr.

1: 1865 census shows age 56 therefore should have been born in 1909. age difference on the census between Hans and Marit shows 6 year difference. (age 50, and age 56)

2: 1839 marriage record, age of Marit not perfectly readable but clearly shows both of Scheslien farm.
The age shown appears to be age 28. Hans age 22, so 6 year difference
3: the birth record I found was for Marit Nielsdtr. born 1811 to Niels Nielsen and Kari Guldbrandsdtr., child from Scheslien farm.

Is this the correct birth record ? ( dated Jan 1982)

Rechecked birth records.. this is the only one ..Also birth record shows the right father, (Niels Nielsen), shows the right farm (Scheslien farm), only the birth date seems off by 1 or 2 years..

Checking the 1865 census records for this area it appears that other ages are off by 2 years as well. (son Kristian shows age 15 so should have been born in 1850, he actually was born Feb 1851, son Martin shows age 13 so indicates born 1852, actually born in Nov 1853. daughter Marte shows age 27, indicating born 1838 , actually born in Feb 1840.


More: a search for siblings to the above Marit Nielsdtr. turned up
1: Peder Nielsen b. 1804, and
2: Gulbrand Nielsen born 1807,
of the same parents as above (Niels Nielsen and Kari Guldbrandsdtr.)

Now the clincher: In 1839 at the wedding of Marit Nielsdtr . and Hans Jacobsen who were known proven ancestors of mine ) were the following witness's to the marriage.

1: Peder Nielsen
2: Gulbrand Nielsen
3: Karen Nielsen

These obvious siblings of Marit Nielsdtr. leave no doubt that the birth record of Marit Nielsen to Niels Nielsen and Kari Guldbrandsdtr. and the marriage recored of Marit Nielsen to Hans Jacobsen are referring to one and the same Marit Nielsdtr.

More: A letter from Andreas Pettersen of Norway in my possession dated 1986 who knows the history of the family well, confirmed that Marit had a sister Karen born 1823 so this fits exactly as well.

Marit married Hans Jacobsen, son of Jacob Nielsen and Marthe Hansdatter, on 23 Dec 1839 in Sondre Land, Kristian Cty., Norway.³⁷⁷ (Hans Jacobsen was born on 27 Oct 1817 in Vardal, Oppland, Norway ^{190,388,397,407}, christened on 9 Nov 1817 in Vardal, Oppland, Norway ³⁹¹ and died after 1885 in North Dakota??.)
