Funeral Memories
Bessie Nerina Jensen, the second child of Martin and Malla Larson was born in Wisconsin on January 6th, 1911, shortly before the family moved to Sturgis. She was educated in Sturgis and confirmed at St. John Lutheran Church in Preeceville.
Bessie was a hard worker. She began by doing housework on local farms, was a clerk and assistant postmistress in Sturgis and Rockford and retired after several years of looking after a teacher's children and household.
She married Anthon Olson in 1937. They had one son. Anthon passed away in 1979. Bessie married Neil Jensen in 1981. They lived in Sturgis, Canora, Medicine Hat, Nipawin, and Preeceville. She passed away at their home on March 7th, 1993.
Bessie, a member of the Legion Auxiliary, became a Legion member. She also belonged to the R.E.A.D. Club, the Co-op, and a ladies organization. An ardent Bingo and Nevada player, Bessie also enjoyed Canasta, old-time fiddling. House parties and dances were major social events. She loved shopping and auction sales. She collected antique dishes, especially cream and sugar sets.
A resourceful person, she had helped support the family by raising and shearing sheep, carding and spinning the wool, and knitting gloves and socks for sale. She also crocheted, made pillows, did embroidery and sewed. She loved gardening and canning.
Although much of her life was hard, she was cheerful and dedicated to her family.
Predeceased by her parents and first husband; one brother Oliver Larson; and one sister Kathleen Georgina; she is survived by one son, Anthon Bruce (Veronica) Olson of Belleville Ontario; one step-son, Trayton (Joyce) Jensen of Toronto; two step-daughters, Faith (Jim) Adams of Medicine Hat and Vallery Jensen of Edmonton; one brother Gordon (Ida) of Armstrong B.C.; two sisters Inez Anderson of Kelowna, B.C. and Millie Nightingale of Hudson Bay Sask., seven grand-children; one special great grand-child Brendan Bonagofsky; many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
