_____________________ : July 20, 2001 Hi Jan;
Nice of you to send the mention on Asahel Winch, my great grandfather whom you mentioned from the History of Fillmore County, as well as his uncle William,., my grandmother talked about Amherst often, and the fun their big family of nine and her mother Elizabeth English as well. Yes Asahel did go to Dakota, and so did James for a little bit, and MY grandmother who was about 18 yrs, went with them to keep house. The mother Elizabeth had died just before , so Asahel was free to accompany one of her young brothers and herself to Dakota. They settled a bit west of Brookings, I have looked up the township, and they (my grandmother (margaret) Jane kept house for them) filed a claim, and did some improvements. I know that Grandma Jane stayed only the one season, and went back to the area near Tracy MN, near her other two sister and husbands who lived between Currie and Tracy, where she took up work being a housekeeper and nurse. After a couple of years she met my grandfather John Robbins and they married in the mid-80's. There were several very dry years, and I do know for sure that her Dad, Asahel went back to Fillmore Co., helping his sons in the sawmill works they continued. Where James went after that you now have followed. The cute family joke that grandmother Jane Winch Robbins told about her father Asahel Winch...regarding the claim in South Dakota was that the water in that area was fairly high in mineral content, and affected his digestive tract so harshly that he was quite happy to reutrn to Fillmore County. He did spend quite a lot of time visiting with his daughters Martha Winch Vickerman, Jane Winch Robbins and Annie Winch Dibble, as these three had ample room and enjoyed his company. He lived to 97 years, and did not need glasses, but rolled up a newspaper in a cylinder when he wanted to see something at a distance. My mother said they had so many grandparents living at her family at various times(one gr. grandm., one grandmo.Robbins, and on the other side Grandpa Asahel; Winch, that she had to sleep on a daybed in the dining room when they were all there. So goes family life in by-gone days. Longevity was tremendous, and all the above lived into their mid- 90's!! June Lindquist
