bullet  General Notes:

From a letter dated June 16, 1964 from Lydia to Mrs. Bertha Fairly.
"I was named for an Aunt Lydia who was a sister of my dad's. Her married name was Dafoe and second marriage was Evans."
When Lydia was "a wee bit of a child" she went to her father's mill to take him lunch. When she got there she found him pinned under the mill stone, which had broken. She ran for help and her father credited her with saving his life.
Lydia loved school, but only achieved the 4th Grade, as her mother began to have health problems, and she had to stay home to help out. Lydia was a very handy person. She sewed for herself and her family, and always had some kind of handiwork in progress. During WWI she was hired to make gentlemen's shirts of fine materials, often silk. She also was a capable nurse and did home nursing when she was needed. Lydia loved music and used to hum while she worked. Unfortunately, she was tone deaf, so it was hard to recognize the tunes. Lydia belonged to the Masonic Order of the Eastern Star, and was an active member most of her life. When daughter Lottie's husband died, George and Lydia, came to live with her to help out and take care of Lottie's eight year old daughter, Marilyn, while Lottie looked for work. They continued to live together until George and Lydia died. Lydia lived six weeks past her 100th birthday. As she used to like to say, "I came from a family of 'long livers'."
