Hanson, Christian, by Tena Hedley
My father Christian Hanson was born in Blair, Wisconsin in 1882. In 1905 he married Nellie Larson. He came to Canada in 1909 and filed on Sec. 35-34-5 what is now the Preeceville R.M. In the early 1950's this property was known as "turkey" farm. The land was unsuitable for farming. A lot of sand and gravel, the rest was swamp.

In April of 1910 he brought my mother , Hulda, Lillian and myself (Tena) there to live. I was six months old, so cannot recall much of the early years. My brother William and sister Stella Florence were born on the homestead. Dad had two oxen to break land with and later two horses.

In 1914 Dad borrowed money from the bank to buy lumber to build a frame house, as we were then living in a two room log house. When, one evening we were away over night everything burned to the ground including the partly built new house. My father signed the homestead over to the bank to pay off the loan. After that we lived like gypsies always on the move. Some places were hardly fit for habitation. Dad worked as a labourer all his life and with a growing family there were some pretty slim pickings. In 1917 we moved to Preeceville as my father got the contract to build the Preeceville Creamery. I started school there in 1918. Later I attended Sunny Brae and Etoimanie Valley schools. My mother did all her washing on a wash board for years, till a hand operated machine was purchased. She made her own bread and the cooking and baking was done on a wood stove. She picked wild fruit and put it down in sealers, and many vegetables were canned.

The shopping was done in Canora where they travelled by oxen and later in Preeceville.

There were ten children in our family, all born at home with attendance of a midwife, and sometimes father would lend a hand. Four sons served in armed forces. We were all baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran Church.

The family:
Hulda (Gronsdahl) born 1905 had 12 children. She died in 1958
Lillian (Roman) a family of 6 children. Deceased in 1972
Tena (Hedley) Born in 1909 -- has 2 sons and four daughters
William lives in Sturgis -- has one daughter
Stella Florence (MacDonald) 2 sons and 2 daughters. Deceased in 1972.
Norman born 1916-- was killed in France in 1944
Carlton-- has four children and lives in Yorkton
Gordon-- lives in Preeceville -- has five children
Melford- Born 1922 lives in England - has 2 children
Bernice (Mailhot) born in 1929-- has 7 children.
Father died in 1940 and mother in 1953
