James next married Elizabeth Hamilton on 13 Apr 1876 in Blue Earth County, Minnesota.2 (Elizabeth Hamilton was born about 1852 in Scotland,2 15 died on 22 May 1908 in St. Peter, Minnesota 16 and was buried in Resurrection Cemetery, St. Peter, Minnesota, plot 312 16.)
It would appear that the marriage of James Winch to Elizabeth Hamilton didnt last long as the two are separated on the 1880 census with Elizabeth still using her Hamilton name and living at least temporarily with her cousin Thomas Hamilton in Pleasant Mound township of Blue Earth County, MN. |

Subject: James Winch's 2nd wife found
Hi,
I haven't made it over to Fllmore county yet and guess I won't get there for while now, as I return to work on the 17th. But I did make it back to the Blue Earth County Court House and found out thats Where JAMES WINCH remarried for the second time, after ALLISON DOUGLAS WINCH died in 1875 he remarried (drum roll please) ELIZABETH HAMILTON on April 13, 1876, it was witnessed by THOMAS HAMILTON & GEORGE HAMILTON. I then checked the 1880 Census for Blue Earth County in the Pleasant Mound township and found this:

Winch, James Robert, obituary, 1940, Fairmont Sentinal, 1940. :
JAMES ROBERT WINCH
Rev. W. O. Johnson conducted funeral services Sunday afternoon at 1:30 at the home and 2:00 o'clock at the Truman Baptist Church for James Robert Winch who died at his home last Friday following a lingering illness from cancer. Burial was at Nashville cemetery.
James Robert Winch son of James and Elsie Winch, was born on may 28th, 1865 in Nashville township, and passed away at his home in Truman at 11:30 a. m. April 26, 1940 after a lingering illness of cancer at the age of 74 years, 10 months and 28 days.
On December 22, 1888, he was united in marriage to Cora Adelia Herrick, at the bride's home in Nashville township by Rev. W,. Bacon, an uncle of Mrs. Winch. To this union were born twelve children, nine of whom survived their father, namely Lee, Burt, Elsie (Mrs. Elmer Sackett), Jay, Orrie, all of Truman, Ina (Mrs. Roy Sugar) of Donaldson, Everett, Paul and Robert also of Truman. One daughter and two sons died in infancy. After their marriage they farmed in Nashville and later near Amboy until Mr. Winch became lineman for the telephone company and they took charge of
the central office at Nashville Center. In 1918 they moved to Truman, where Mr. Winch became lineman for the local telephone company and continued until his retirement.
When a young man he united with the Baptist Church at Nashville and in 1918 when they moved to town, he united with the Community Baptist Church in Truman, where he was elected to the board as deacon of this church until the time of his death, a period of over 20 years. Shortly after moving to town he also became custodian of the church building and served faithfully and well in that capacity until illness made him give up that work a little over a year ago. He was a member of the Odd Fellows Lodge for a number of years while the lodge at Truman was in existence and served in various offices in that lodge. He will be missed greatly by his many friends in Truman, and by his church where he served so long and faithfully. Leaving to mourn his passing besides his widow and nine children, are 23 grandchildren and 5 great grandchildren, 1 brother Wally Winch of Bemidji, one sister, Mrs. Anna Schribner of Staples and one half brother, John Winch of Truman. Besides these there are a large number of neices and nephews, many other more distant relatives and a host of friends.

Family History of the North American Douglases
Our North American Family can trace its origin to James Douglass.
James Douglass was christened on May 5, 1755 in Coldingham. He married Mary Wallace on May 30, 1777. Mary was christened on June 8, 1755, in the town of Hutton. Scottish records indicate that James was a black smith in the town of Renton. Eight children were born to this union, among them James Douglas, who made the crossing to the New World. The children of James Douglas and Mary Wallace were:

James Douglas [December 21, 1789 - 1860]
The Scottish progenitor of the North American Douglasses, James Douglas continued his father's occupation and was a black smith by trade. He apparently moved around during the early part of his marriage, owing to the birth places of his first three children. By the birth of his 4th child, Marion, the family had settled in the small village of Westruther, located in the county of Berwickshire in Eastern Scotland, not far from the city of Lauder. The village was founded in 1657 and in the 1990 census, had a population of 829. It is nestled amid the rolling hills of Scotland and its principal industry has not changed in hundreds of years, sheep herding. It stands in the shadow of the great Red Douglas stronghold of Tantalon Castle.
James Douglass married Alison Laing. She was born in 1795. Scottish records do not indicate the location. Ten children were born to this union.

(Last Ancestor born in Scotland)
Children: Born in Canada:
10) Alexander (M) Born: 1844
For some unknown reason, one that will never be known to us, they decided to leave their native Scotland forever and make the difficult journey across the sea to the New World.
They had nine children by the time they decided to migrate. Two sons accompanied them to Canada. The others either had died or decided to remain in Scotland, as their names do not appear in either Canadian or Minnesota records. John, their third son and Robert their fourth son (my direct ancestor) accompanied their parents to Canada.
If the other children in fact did travel to the New World, they either died in route or died shortly after their arrival as their names are not mentioned in any New World records.
Canada was their destination. They boarded a sailing ship and made the perilous crossing over the North Atlantic. They made this epic journey in 1831.
They came down the St. Lawrence River as far as Montreal and then moved inland settling in an area south of the city known as the Eastern Townships. This area had already been settled by English speaking peoples from England, Scotland and Ireland. Among them, colonists from America, loyal to the Crown, had also settled. These colonists made a hasty retreat into British controlled territory when the rebel Americans were successful in overthrowing English rule.
They settled in a beautiful little village known as Russeltown in Quebec. It was located very close to the American border, north of the state of New York. This region was primarily settled by Irish Protestants. The low rolling hills reminded them of county Monaghan. Lovell's Gazetteer of the Dominion of Canada describes it as, "A small village in Chateauguay county, located on the Keithburn river. It has one Presbyterian church, a general store, a blacksmith shop, shoe maker's shop and a butter factory. The recorded population in 1840 was 112." Here amid people of his own faith James Douglass settled and resumed his trade as a Blacksmith. The "History of the County of Huntingdon,² researched in Montreal, mentions James Douglass by name. ³There lived a Scotch Black Smith by the name of James Douglass.²
While the Family lived in Canada, Alison's third son Alexander was born in 1844.
Canadian Census records indicate at the two older brothers, John and Robert married in Canada. John married a Canadian wife. Due to the close proximity to the United States, Robert married an American woman from Vermont.
John Douglass Married: Mary Born: 1843 (Canada)
Robert Douglass Married: Eliza Born: 1829 (Vermont, USA)
James Douglas died on July 11, 1860. He was buried in Russelltown and his occupation was listed as a blacksmith. The minister who conducted the funeral was Rev. James Fulton of the Episcopal Congregation of Russelltown. The records mention that his son Alexander was present and James Douglas. James most likely was his grandson, however could have been his older brother James back in Scotland. However we have no documentation that he ever saw his Scottish brothers and sisters after immigrating to the New World.
For another unknown reason, with the death of James Douglass in 1860 the Family made the decision to move again to another land. They migrated to the United States of America and settled in the State of Minnesota. Their most likely route would be by boat, through the Great Lakes to Duluth and then overland to Canton Township in Fillmore County, Minnesota.
Robert Douglas December 8, 1828 and Died April 16, 1909
Robert was born Dec. 8, 1828, Westruther Scotland, and died April 16, 1909, in Pleasant Mound, Blue Earth Co. Mn., and is buried in Basey Cemetery, Faribault Co. Mn.
Robert Douglas married Eliza Ann Smith about 1844, her parents were
Alpheus Smith of Vermont and Catherine Pickel of Vermont. Eliza was born Sept. 13, 1829 in Vermont and died Aug. 6, 1912, Pleasant Mound, Blue Earth Co. Mn., and is buried in Basey Cemetery, Faribault Co. Mn.

Cousin James
P.S. I was out doing an early morning cemetary search (as its blazing hot here and the mornings are cooler) and came across an interesting stone. It was a small stone across the the top slab (not the face) was the name Elison, on the face it read Wife of J. Winch Jan. 17, 1845, Dec. 23, 1875 I beleive this could be James' wife Allison Douglas, next to it was this stone... Robert Douglas Dec. 8, 1828, April 16, 1909, Eliza wife Sept. 13, 1829, Ayg. 6, 1912. Could they be her parents? That was the only Winch stone in the whole cemetary. I wonder where James got off to? It was a nice find because I wasn't expecting to find any Winch's there, I was looking for my grandmothers ancestors hehehe.... I'll have to send this tidbit on to June also.
I found it in Basey Cemetary its in Martin county minnesota ( of course)
Nashville Township. Its only about 5 miles from the Nashville cemetary
where all the other Winches are buried except James Sr. I'm off this morning to look for him.

July 23, 2001, Hi guys,
I just got off the phone with the St. Peter Mental Hospital Records
Department, phone number 1-507-931-7299. This is the real skinny on
Elizabeth (Hamilton) Winch wife of James Winch son of Samuel and Elizabeth (Monteney) Winch.....she was admitted Nov. 28th, 1882, and she died May 22, 1908, she is buried in the Resurrection Cemetery on hwy 99 East of St. Peter with a stone marker numbered 312, I told her I had a number given to me that it was 311 and she corrected me and said no its not its 312. The cemetery is on the right hand side of the road. I asked about old medical records on her if they still existed and was told that after they have been dead 30 years they incinerate them. So we will never know why she was admitted there. The gal on the phone was very nice and eager to help, and was sorry she couldn't
give me more info. So there ya go one more mystery solved. Now on to the next one "Who took care of all them kids?" Because if James went off to Spokane and died just where were them kids?
Still Winch Hunting :)
